Old Apple IMac - any use as spare parts?

Hi all, have checked the various FAQs and stickys but couldn't see anything about this type of thing.

We have an Imac (21'' screen I think) that died last year, when I said it died the screen went and it became uneconomical to repair. Does anyone know anyone who buys second hand machines as I'm sure some parts could be reused again.

Am not looking for a lot of money but would prefer it to be reused (where possible), disposing of an old computer is not as easy as simply putting in a skip either

    Thanks

21.5 inch screen? That would be one of the latest iMacs, which means it is still within warranty. Or is it an older 20 inch iMac? Did it fail or did it break?

plus cant you run another standard screen from it? sometimes imacs (including the old white lamp versions) have screen issues but the video out still works

Its a 21.5 screen, Intel chip IMAC.

Was purchased new in 2007 and 'died' just out of warranty in 2009. We were told that it had a broken graphics card and that it was unenomical to repair (it was about €1100 to replace)

Replaced it late last year and its been collecting dust ever since. Just trying to find out if anyone buys these for spare parts?

I think you mean a 20 or 24 inch. The 21.5 was only introduced last year.

It's a shame you didn't go after the seller at the time. Under Irish law you would have been entitled to a free repair regardless of warranty.

Anyway, you could try selling it on Ebay or Adverts, I suppose.

sorry for going of topic here but would the same apply to speakers I bight from thomann only a few months back, it is possible the blew through over powering them and won't know that until they take a look at them in Germany, am I entitled to have the parts replace regardless under Irish law?

Well, if you only bought them a few months ago they are within warranty. So you shouldn't have any problem anyway. Go after Thomann or whoever made them, it's up to you.

When I said regardless of warranty, I didn't mean regardless of the problem. If it is user-inflcted then you are out of luck either way, but I've had blown speakers replaced in the past. Unless they find a big finger-sized hole in one of the speakers you'll probably be okay.

The important point about Irish and European consumer law is that you don't need an extended warranty (Applecare, etc) to get a faulty product fixed.
