I have a 00reg 1.4vvti petrol corolla, never had a days bother with it, oil always change regurarly etc.

car has 107k on the clock

twice in the last 300miles while coasting to a stop at 20mph in 4th gear car has stalled for no apparent reason

doubt very much if its fuel or air filter as no black smoke and no loss of power

haven't changed my spark plugs in a while about 37k so will try that first

    any other ideas .....

    thanks

37K miles on a set plugs
When was the last time it got a service that wasn't just an oil change ?
Have never seen black smoke from a petrol btw.

my 00 Corolla VVTi had plugs which were only a service item every 5 services (45K), they cost a bomb to change though.

Had the same issue with a 00 Focus. Turns out a pipe (not sure what type, could have been for air) needed to be replaced. A tuning was also needed to fix it.
Whatever it is it probably wont take too much to fix it.

dunno but if I were driving at 20mph in 4th gear mine would probably stall too

I was coasting to a stop in 4th gear at 20mph so car was under no load whatsoever

It coild be the stepper motor, its just a wee part that stops the engine revving down too fast and cutting out i.e. when you're driving along and you push the clutch, the revs drop, if they drop too fast the engine will cut out. Get it checked, I had the same prob on my old 306

had exactly the same problem with my lexus.

main Toyota dealer fixed it so easily that they did not even charge me for it.

Cleaning something, can't remember, in the fuel intake.

    sounds like a vacuum problem.
i had this problem with a Lancer Evolution before, different engines i know but it might help.

on the Evo it turned out to be dump valve, the evo uses a recirculating valve as standard but the dump valve was dumping the air to the atmosphere as such and hence caused the problem.

although the lack of serviceing could be an issue too.
