Friend of mine asked me for suggestions for altish/indieish music for a wedding playlist, and I was curious what other folks would suggest.

Bear in mind a) he wants a bit of variety, b) ideally there's some sort of running romance theme, c) it can't be so weird as to alienate anybody, and d) you want people to dance, what would be your alternative wedding song suggestions?

    Truly beautiful.

It is beautiful, but I'm not sure if it's going to set the happy, hope-sodden tone one would aim for at a young couple's wedding...

Please Release Me - Ingelbert Humperdink.

It's all in the lyrics for a tongue in cheek opener... no?

And weddings are all about the cheese, no point in trying to be cool...

Not really, I knew a guy who went to a wedding in a forest, in Leitrim.

Not so much about being cool, but it's a small informal wedding with close family and friends, and they want music they like. I've no doubt they'll have a bit of cheese thrown in just to keep everyone happy, but you know weddings, plenty of time for everything.

    Outkast - Hey Ya.

Another few suggestions - and some of these are skirting close to the edge of schmaltzy cheese.

Time after time - Cindy Lauper (This version is guaranteed to either clear the room or start fights - best to stick to the original, I think.)
Let's stay together - Al Green
    French Navy - Camera Obscura
    You and me - Wannadies
Golden lady/ Superstition (Live on Sesame Street )/ Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
    Too young / If I ever feel better/ Listomania/ 1901 - Phoenix
La Ritournelle (Mr Dan Remix) or Original (7 mins long)/ Divine - Sebastien Tellier

The Smashing Pumpkins - Stand Inside Your Love
    You and me
    Meant to be
    Immutable
    Impossible
    It's destiny
    Pure lunacy
    Incalculable
    Insufferable
    But for the last time
You're everything that I want and ask for
    You're all that I'd dreamed
Who wouldn't be the one you love
Who wouldn't stand inside your love

    Beautiful lyrics...

I also agree with Ryan Adams - When The Stars Go Blue and Nick Cave- Into My Arms.
Just please not Tom Baxter - Better again...
