Clive i use 8/32 swarovski els, great light and compact set of binoculars.
The way i look at it is the less weight your carrying all the better.

A lad i stalk with got a pair of 7/42 swarovski slcs they are a lovely set of binos.

Rmacleod have a few demo models for sale at the minute.

    CliveJ,
I have always found that a 4X scope is all I want for culling deer. I am getting a rangefinder (7x) and don't really like using binos.

Anyhow, I would think the 8x should be enough. I imagine you want to be able to glass the field a bit closer than the scope.

My only concern is the decreased field of view.

Given the two choices, I think I would let price drive my final decision.

Have you considered a smaller bell? Are you fine with the size?

I have noticed that there's a lot of gadgets that I am carrying about nowadays. Unlike the old days of iron sights rifle and knife. Look and feel more like a paratrooper these days though.

Whose glass are you looking at?

8x42 for me, not that I stalk... deer anyhow.

Got a pair of Opticron 7x42 and I think they're fantastic, twitchers love them, and they know their glass.

The most important ,indispensable ,often over looked bit of kit for the deer .

i bought some jap crap at the start until one day i looked through a pair of Zeiss B Gats 7 x 42 ,pennies were saved and a pair were bought .

i used them for many years in all weathers for hours on end ,this is where a top quality pair come into there own .
eye strain using a lesser quality will become a problem ,you will notice this when you take the binoculars down it will take your eyes a second or 3 to refocus .

a few years ago i bought a pair of leica geovids 8 x 42 ,these i love the range finder is so handy .they are as clear as any and well built .i abused them for 3 years now with out problems ,i use them for spotting and ranging vermin also .

    Zeiss . leica, swro , kahles in 7 or 8 x 42 .

lads will tell you bushnels , pantax this that and the other ,they have never use high end binoculars or are half blind in the first place

Well I ordered a set of Bushnell bins and they arrived on Friday. A pair of legends 8x42 off ebay from the states @€;138 all in (£250 in the UK) and no import duty this time.
I know and hear what your all saying about the better makes but the $$$$$$$ are tight (like myself).

Compared to what I was using these are great and very compact.
