Land levels for drainage

    Folks
I'm looking at getting some drainage done over the next few years. There is a long flat section of land running through the middle of the farm which I'd like to get levels for. Depending on its height, I have two different options of where to drain it to.

So any ideas. All I'd need is to get 4 or 5 levels. Could I hire a device to do this? Get some one in?

You can measure the levels very easily using a water hose. The following link explains it.
I've used this method loads of times when getting levels for concrete fences, small yards etc.
Over longer distances you might want to be careful with friction in the pipes so check it a few times.

    Thanks pakalasa
That is a handy tool!. However I'm looking at getting levels a long distance apart, ~500m and this would seem a long way for this equipment.
I'm wondering is there a height meter or something like it that I could just reading a measurement off? I'll ring a local hire company tomorrow and see have they any ideas.

A "Theodolite" is what the surveyors use. Google it and see...
I'm sure there must be plenty guys quite in construction now that could do it for you as a nixer.

Laser level from a tool hire will only cost about 25 euro for a day, All you have to do is set it up in one spot and walk with yout staf and work out your levels with the beeps from the staf. They are very easy to operate.
