It's happened to me so many times, so I thought a thread about what to do after getting to a gig, pressing play, and nothing happening would be good.

Had a weird problem last night which I still don't understand, but solved by turning off and on my Mac, so that's usually a good place to start.

Plugging into a phono slot instead of line is also a regular one in dark booths, as is burning an MP3 CD and not understanding why the track search buttons do nothing.

You should work in IT support! :o

On that, you guys runnin virtual, what do you have as a backup in case of a BSOD etc?

Thinking on it, I could handle a crash ok, but if I was terribly unlucky and my HDD packed in/similar I'd be bolloxed. Anyone have full redundancy?

Novation Automap still continues to confuse me, really picky about the order you connect gear.

I just take my CD bag too in case, might take a minute of plugging in the decks but not a disaster.

Every laptop DJ should have a CD loaded and ready to play imo.
Might seem a bit extreme, but it's better than standing there in silence like a spare prick while you wait for your laptop to load back up after a crash...

has anyone heres laptops ever actually failed?

i remember reading an interview with sasha and he was sayin "of course it has happened to me"

if it happens to the man like everyone would probably jus cheer. if it happens to a relatively amateur expect shoes to be thrown at you!!

Yep, I normally do, even just to throw on a long enough track while you set up, so you're not annoying the DJ before you setting up around them.

can you not just setup beforehand, with an mp3 ready to go.

and how come in the likes of tripod, 9 out of 10 djs i go to see jus mixes straight into whatever the last track played by the warm up dj.

except for certain djs like zabiela, holden ect.

is that frowned upon?!! stopping the music altogether for ur own intro or whatever?!

A lot of the time I won't be able to make to the gig before the music's started, so I'll have to set up during someone playing.

As long as there's not too much of a gap I think you can stop the music, but only if you're an actual headliner, and people are there for you. If not, it's just a bit wanky.

can imagine setting up the xone3d being a pain in the ass while someones playing :o

and is it not awkward mixing between 2 seperate systems?

lets say, ur mixing on ableton and a toplap and i come on after and im using traktor and my toplap? how do they overcome that

gone are the days it was merely vinyl that everyone sued and you could just go straight in like

Well I use the club mixer, so for me it just means plugging in my 2/4 channels, whatever I'm using.

I think someone not using the mixer will either plug their main out into a free channel on the mixer, or they could just go straight into the Pa.
