Just wondering, when you buy a new car in Westmeath will it automatically have westmeath plates or can you get it registered in a county of your own choice?

You get the plates of wherever you register it to - basically the county you live in.

I put down folks address years ago to get a D reg instead of WW.

I know it makes no sense but a colleague was told the dealer would be more willing to trade in down the line if could D reg his car.

You can get any county reg you want. Simply give an address in that county and then use the change of address option to change it to your real address.

When I was looking at an unregistered Japanese import I was told I could use my uncles address in Dublin to get a D reg, then just change the address afterwards to my own one.

Correct and it does not increase the number of owners.

That's actually interesting why people would prefer to have D reg than any other.

Because some dealers would think a car with a country reg would be thrashed/treated harshley and thus worth less for resale.

In 17 years of driving I have always had D cars. Strange considering I live at the other end of the country.
