Apple IIgs + Mac OS 10.6 - won't boot up???

    Hey guys,
I've just tried to install Mac OS 10.6 on an Apple IIgs I got, but it won't boot up, just hangs every time? Do I need to get more RAM or use an earlier system or something?

Just yanking your chains. I have an Apple IIgs here, no idea how I got my hands on it, probably a rescue at some point in the last 10 years, but either way I have it sitting in a box here waiting for a new home.

I could bring it to recycling, I suppose, but it seems to me to be a terrible waste of a semi-historic piece of hardware. I used one in school, guess it had something to do with pointing me in the direction of the Apple ecosystem. There is no screen, no keyboard, no cables, but it comes with a floppy drive or two (actually, one of them might be a CD drive). I'll have to double check. I'm not trying to sell it because it is obviously not worth anything, it just might be a nice acquisition for a true fanatic, and I'll ask in some other media too.

And no, I didn't try to install Mac OS 10.6 on it - sure, it would have to have a DVD drive to do that! ;)

God damn you for being in Dublin. I'd have that in a flash, would go with my original Apple Macintosh, my SE40, and my IIe.

Seriously? Do you want it? We can figure something out. I think it deserves a good home. And if you have that other kit, you'll probably know how to fire it up; it seems in good nick, but you never can tell...

I'd say shoot for it Maccored, I'm in Cork and not likely to be in Dublin any time soon. Would be good to see a machine like that end up in a good home!

Recieved - let's do this thing! This isn't a sale, to be clear, so no warranty is implied, and no deals binding (just an 'ass-covering' boiler-plate :) ).

    Hey all,
maccored unfortunately thinks he might have trouble picking up the IIgs from me - does anyone else want it? As before, entirely free:
    • Apple IIgs, which may or may not work
    • 3.5" floppy drive
    • 5.25" floppy drive
I can't go too far afield for delivery, I'm based near Cabra on the Navan road in Dublin, and I'd love to see this go to an Apple/Mac enthusiast who might have a use for it, they're hard enough to come by.

    Let me know.

I'd love to Kel but I've already got about 7 computers in the house, I bring another one in and she'll beat lumps outta me, but for any takers out there here's the link to the software to run it (assuming you can still get your hands on a 5.25" floppy)

I'd take it but it's instead of it being binned. Where is yer man that he can't collect?

Just waiting to hear back from maccored. Yeah, that's my sentiment too; if I had a big enough house (sure, a house of any size) then I might hang on to it and try and get it working for the hell of it but I'm very stuck for space and time at the moment. So it has to go.

On the other hand, it's not like turfing out recently-made and very uncollectable but dysfunctional Epson printer, which is something else I'm going to have to do very shortly. You heard it hear first kids, don't use cheap 3rd party inks in your Epson if you intend to use it for more than 2 weeks! :P

Good home wanted for the Apple II, that's the bottom line.

putting it out there - I can facilitate delivery of this(within reasonable distance) if maccored or anyone else might have a problem collecting it.

    summed up nicely by kevteljeur:
Good home wanted for the Apple II, that's the bottom line.

Really? Wow. Yeah, well after I see if the other two are still interested but in principle of course, this is exactly what I'm after. Someone who can actually get a use out of this hopefully still functioning museum piece.

After all this trauma, the damn thing better work. Else I'll feed it through an AppleWriter II, one chip at a time.

I'm interested and I'm Dublin based with my own form of transportation!

Deadly. PM me if the others fall through and we'll give her a good home. Of course, you can visit her whenever you want ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭kevteljeur

Wow, that was a sleeper hit! Ok, I'll work my way through the queue, great to see the interest. As always, a disclaimer:
    • It is free
    • It may not work at all
    • It has next to no cables
    • No monitor
    • There are two disk drives, 5.25" and 3.5". Massive yokes.
    • I would prefer a collect but I can drop it in if you're not far from Cabra/Navan Road

So, make sure that you know what you need to do to get it running or it'll be a disappointment for you, just in case any of you thinks it'll be an easy piece to get going ;)
    1. PaintDoctor - Maybe still too far away, still has a shout
    2. Maccored - Might not be able to pick it up, still waiting to confirm that
    3. Banquo - Has friend with Museum

Actually, I've been working my ass off lately (good complaint I guess), and meant to get back to this - I need to fire off some pms and get the ball rolling. Apologies to all! I really have to get that thing out the door. Ok, I'll pm everyone later on.

Sorry for keeping you all on hold! :)

    Any further updates?

Has it been claimed? If no response to PM how long are you waiting before moving to next person on list?

    Thanks Kev!

And the winner is... OSI! Who has picked up his new museum piece just now. Thanks everyone, apologies to any disappointed participants! Hopefully OSI can keep us updated on his progress, very curious.
