Nat type 3 to Nat type 2 easily

    Hi all,

A lot of people's ps3s, having set up automatically, are nat 3 by default.
As you're probably aware, this can cause problems in chat and online games.

Then people start going to portforward.com, setting static ips, looking for their dns servers and forwading ports all over the shop.

A forum I came across said make sure to check that you'd enabled UPnP (universl plug and play) on your router before getting into all that..
When you do the internet connection test on your ps3 it probably says unavailable. So,

    Step 1:

    On your pc/laptop go to
    Start
    All Programs
    Accesories
    Command prompt

When the command prompt window opens type "ipconfig"
and note down your default gateway.
    It'll be something like 192.168.3.5.

    Step 2:
Open your internet browser and type the number into your address bar.
This will bring you to your router homepage.

Now you need to find out the password.
I'm with perlico so it was 1234 by default.
If you're with another isp you may need to ring them up and ask them for it.

    Step 3:
Once you've logged in it may ask you if you want to change the password from default. Either way, when you're in you should see the router status page. On the left hand side you'll see options.
Again, I'm perlico and have a zyxel router so the options are:
    Network
    Security
    Advanced
    Maintenance

    Step 4:
    Click on "Advanced".
You'll see more options, one of which should be "UPnP".
Click on it. Finally, put a tick in the boxes that say:

    1) Active the Universal Plug and Play(UPnP) Feature and
    2) Allow users to make configuration changes through UPnP

Then click apply at the bottom, the changes will save and you can log out.

    Final step:

Run the internet connection test on your ps3.
It should now say UPnP is available and you've nat type 2.

Some of the steps may be slightly different if you're with a different isp and have a different router. Also, while most routers are UPnP compatible it's possible that some may not be.

If you're after nat type 1 I recommend doing a search for "keep it carlow" on youtube.

Lastly, just to say that nat type stands for "network address translation" and basically 1, 2 and 3 mean:

Nat 1 is a connection straight to the internet.
Nat 2 is a connection through a router.
Nat 3 means you have limited connectivity through a router and hence the problems.

The reason some people shy away from type one is that your ps3 is open to getting a virus. At the moment, however, no virus can get at the ps3 and it can't run .exe files. So it's your choice.

Until a week or so I didn't have a clue what nat, dns or any of that jazz meant and it took hours of google and bing to get to grips with it so hopefully it saves some people some time.

I have my PS3 in a DMZ config and have NAT type 1 now. Had problems with chat and other random things while on NAT 2.

Sorry about this but having made the changes I noticed my laptop's wireless connection was dropping after a while and wouldn't come back on until I restarted it.

I went back into the router settings and unticked the configuration box under UPnP and it stopped the connection dropping.
I wasn't sure at the time whether to tick it or not.
So don't! Just tick the first box :

Activate the Universal Plug and Play(UPnP) Feature.

    (See edit below).

My connection has decided to go back to nat type 3.
Looks like I'm gonna have to go for type 1 and if that doesn't work I'm going with
4g92mit and getting a new router.

I can't believe people still have NAT problems. If you have Eircom check this video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JugGe7CCuNU.

If you are on Vodafone watch the video and insert vodafone@vodafone.ie instead of broadband1 and the password is broadband. These work, sometimes some people have needed to go into - Network Settings, disable Internet Connection and Enable it again for new settings to take effect. Hope this helps people.

On both the xbox and ps3, on a dsl connection inputting your PPPoE username and password into the console will give you an open nat type.
