would anyone know where I might be able to get a celebrant for a ceremony we are writing ourselves and holding in our garden?

The few I've seen online are really expensive and I can't think of a friend/relative who might be suitable.

    Thanks.

If there is a branch of Toastmasters or any kind of public speaking / debating society near you, you could try asking there?

Hi, we are using a lovely lady called Romy, she is going to perform our ceremony, which is effecively a blessing as we will be married by the registrar before that. Her rate is very reasonable at €300. You can get her at romy@abeautifulceremony.ie

I'd second Romy, planning on using her services ourselves for our wedding

Try getting in touch with the Humanist Association of Ireland. Contact details and info on what they're about and what they do are all on www.humanism.ie

Are the humanist celebrants cheaper than the celebrants you find on the internet? - The last one I found was €300. Is this a normal price?

I'd say that's fairly normal all right.

We're having a humanist and she's more than that. But I'm very happy to support the humanist association! And although the ceremony is short, it's still probably her whole day's work.

still a good bit cheaper than a priest, after you've factored in the price to use the church, the 'donation' to the priest, the 'donation' to the alter boys, the 'donation' to the flower ladies, the 'donation' to the sarchristian, the 'donation' to the organist.... :p

Go for it I reckon - I think a humanist ceremony would be lovely

I think it really depends on whereabouts in the country you are, and how far the Humanist Celebrant would have to travel.

The fee we were quoted is €450 - initially I thought it was a bit steep , but as Cincikchick says, with church weddings you've to "donate" to priest, altar boys/girls, sacrastan, flower ladies so ends up much the same.

And you get a much more personal ceremony where you choose exactly what you want said. Bear in mind though, that it's not actually legally binding, so you'll have to arrange a civil ceremony as well.
