All the threads on this topic are ancient so thought I would just start a new one to see if anybody has any updated advice on which is the best online rental store.

Ones I have looked at so far are :

    http://www.onlinedvdrentals.ie/
    http://www.screenclick.com/Default.aspx
    http://www.dvdsdirect.ie/dvdindex.php

Also, if you rent a game can you pretty much keep it for as long as you want ?

The first one looks like the best deal, but anybody got any personal recommendations ?

How long you can rent them for really depends on the package you take with them. Some will charge you €6.99 and you keep em for a month. Others will charge you €10.99 and let you keep the disc for an unlimited period, but you're paying €10.99 so you could just as easily find the film for less than that somewhere in town.

Try Games, Films or Consumers for some proper advice.
Don't use any of em meself, still prefer wandering into Xtra-Vision during the sales.

Can't speak for the others but I'd recommend you stay away from screenclick anyway. When you sign up first it's a great deal and all your top choices are sent you. However after about 2 months the turnaround slows down and your top choices are no longer sent out to you (I mean NEVER, not just once in a while). I've read up on this business model and it appears to be the norm across the board on how they operate. Basically they want to keep you sweet long enough so that they get the benefit of your positive word-of-mouth to friends. After that they don't give a damn about you. Their service is entirely focused on new customers.

The final stray was when they even double-billed me one month and when I rang up customer service I caught them out lying to me about a particular detail of our arrangement. Cancelled my contract right there and then on the phone.

So all in all a waste of time and money. TBH there's other ways out there if you want to watch movies and DVDs are so cheap these days that you in many cases buy them for cheaper than a nights rental. Basically an all round bad service. I hope they go out of business.

I don't see the point of renting. Wait a month or two after release and they'll be in the 2 for 12 or 4 for 22 deals in HMV etc. Gamestop is good for second hands as well.

I use screenclick at the moment (and have done for about a year) and find the service to be decent for the most part. Sometimes turnaround time lags a bit or my preferred choices might not be sent. When either happens I normally email them immediately to let them know. They normally send an extra dvd when this happens and service is back to normal afterwards.

Whether or not it's worth it depends on how quickly you would watch a film when you get it. We would normally get to see a film within a day or two at most, so with the 'three at a time' package we can get between 12 and 15 dvds a month for 25 quid.

I applied for membership with superquinn movies for my son as a reward for doing well in schoolsmile.gif, they were offering a free 2 week trial at the time so i took them up on the offersmile.gif.
This is what the site promised-
    Free DVD Shipping and Postage
After your initial sign up, DVDs should arrive to your door in about 2 business days via An Post. When you finish watching a movie, simply put it in it's prepaid envelope that comes with each DVD and mail it back to us. After we receive your returned DVD, we'll send the next available DVD from your list. Shipping is always free both ways - no hidden charges. rolleyes.gif

After ten days I received no orderd DVDsmad.gif so i emailed the company requesting cancellation.
    I received no replyconfused.gif
the following day i emailed them again, and againmad.gif and againmad.gif!
After 2 weeks when i checked my bank statement they had taken my money anywayeek.gif.
For what? i never received any DVDs!

Superquinn always overcharged but this was crazy!

I contacted them again but they refuse to return my money. Will keep you posted.

Superquinn is in receivership at the moment pending sale to Musgrave, so it was probably a bad time to be signing up with them. You should try ringing them rather than emailing. Irish companies aren't good for responding to emails in my experience. Personally I wouldn't bother with them for the simple reason that their selection of films is crap. It wouldn't surprise me that they just didn't have any of the films in your rental queue.

Bar the name, superqinnmovies.ie has nothing to do with Superquinn. It's run by www.onlinedvdrentals.ie (who also run http://www.movierentals.ie/ & http://www.dvdsbypost.ie/) Check out the site's, apart from colour, they're identical.

They're based in Kinsealy & the real landline number is 01 828 44 41. There's a few threads on here about them going back a few years... Good luck getting your money back.
