Booking flights online with a cancelled passport/number

I'm travelling from Australia to mainland europe very soon, to do this as cheaply as possible I intend to book three different flights with different airlines - Jetstar - east coast oz to KL / Air Asia - KL - London / Ryanair - London to wherever.

I'm currently waiting on a new passport to be generated (lost it) and I'm wondering in the mean time would it be safe or wise to book flights with my old (and very soon to be cancelled, if not already done) passport number in order to hopefully save a bit of cash on plane tickets.

Does anybody out there have any knowledge of whether this will be an issue? Will it generally cause any problems if I arrive in airports with a new passport/number? Any help appreciated

I would recommend against doing it, if you can. Contact the passport office and ask them if you can have your passport number as soon as it's printed.

If you definitely want to do it, I would suggest contacting the airline directly and asking them if they will accept you travelling under a new passport number if you bring your old one with you also. They might not accept this. Also, if your previous passport is torn in any way, this will not be sent back to you, so there is that risk too.
