    Hi.
What's the story taking wedding photos in the Phoenix Park? Is it allowed? Is it deemed commercial and therefore banned? Seems nasty that if a bride dreams of having her wedding shots there that they'd disallow it.

    Anyone know the difinitive answer?

My understanding is that it's an OPW site, and you simply need to request permission, because a wedding shoot is commercial.

Anything is allowed in the Phoenix park :D

I dont think you need to bother getting permission.
Im sure noone would stop you taking photos. Dont wedding photos get taken in parks all the time and nobody stops them.

I had a wedding recently in stephens green and I rang opw and they said you don't need permission for a wedding. All other commercial work on OPW sites require a licence.

Once you get permission it's fine, all it takes is one phonecall!

It's far handier and less embarassing to ring ahead than try sort something like permissions out on the day.

I saw some poor wedding photographer getting a bit of a rattle off of the OPW lads up there in front of the B&G while I was shooting some portraits up there. They just asked had I gotten permission, no problems when I said I'd rang in in advance.

I suppose it's common courtesy Rachel. Much like meeting with the priest in the church beforehand.

I was there a few weeks ago and there was a wedding shoot at the cross.

Right lads so this is how it went; hindsight first...

Watching Mary going by with a load of screaming Gardi motorcycles it occurred to me that there is a lot co-ordination going on in the Pheeno beyond the casual observer's eye. Mary doing her shopping and all the other events. The wardens are there to manage the park and I think now that if they weren't there to keep a bit of regulation there'd be all sorts of hair brain shinanigens happening in there. So in hindsight I'm glad there's a Park warden on patrol to check EVERYTHING out; including the odd disgruntled photographer barking on about his rights. That's said.

I sent an email to the OPW asking "is it possible?, is it ok?" etc, the response was simply "I need to know how many people will be at the photo shoot and the time and the location within Phoenix Park.". I did a recon tour with the B&G and I got back to him with "a max of 15 people at the flower gardens and/or the cross" (+ time +duration). OPW responded with; " That is no problem, best of luck on the day. Parking information is on our website"

I'm very greatful to the team managing the park.
Don't get your backs up if the stop and enquire about your business when shooting in the park, they're doing a good service. You're cool but the next bloke might be dodgey and you'll be happy they're there to oust them.

In my experience it's a no problem and good experience dealing with the OPW when wanting to take pics in the park. If the dates clashed with RaceDays or other events I'm sure they'd find a solution/alternative even if it wasn't what I initially asked for.:):):)

I have to reiterate the last two post. They are wonderful to deal with and usually go out of their way to accommodate your requests....

Here's an excerpt from an email I received from one nice lady with the general requirements..
The general procedure when applying for permission to hold a photo shoot in the Phoenix Park is as follows:

In the email please include the proposed date/s ; the nature of the shoot ; location / route ; approx start / finish times ; numbers of personnel and vehicles involved and equipment to be used.

If permission is granted organisers are asked to sign the Phoenix Park indemnity form and submit details of their public liability insurance to the effect of € 6.5 M.

Please note that bouncy castles, balloons, large BBQs, gazebos/marquees or commercial catering companies are not permitted for fire, health and safety and wildlife protection reasons.

We look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Please note applications are asked to be submitted three to four weeks in advance.
