Hi guys hope someone can help. Have a Renault Espace petrol automatic 2001 a few months and have been having problems starting it sometimes. Today it wouldn't start until I got a jump and this has happened a few times in the past. Going to the garage on Monday but just looking for ideas as to what it might be. Could it be battery? I have been told it prob not as it is turning over but not sure myself. Also someone suggested it may be flooded but can this be possible if it will eventually start with a jump? Also only realised today (never had an automatic before) that I should have my foot on the brake when I am starting the car. could this have caused a problem?

    Any advice appreciated

Hi there, I've a 1.9d (2004). Have had it for 3 years and car had done this maybe 5 or 6 times. Battery seems to drain, car won't start , until it's jumped.
Bad news is that I've no real clue what is causing it. However I've a suspicion that it happens if I turn the ignition off when the wipers still in the on position. I could be wrong but I think that leaving the wipers I'm the on position causes the bat to discharge.
Btw: if you find out anything will you left me know?
    Thanks and good luck

I had a similar issue with my Xantia. Went through everything I could think of (plugs etc) turned out it was the battery. It kept turning over but wouldnt catch. New battery and all was grand again (and the car now has a new set of plugs :) ). If you have a multimeter test what voltage the battery is putting out.

Funny you say that about the wipers as I had left them on last week when it wouldn't start but I assumed it wouldn't do anything to the battery when the car was off. Today though I didnt have them on an it wouldn't start. I'll let you know outcome from mechanic on monday.

Wouldn't start again this morning first thing but then started 10 mins later??? This makes me think it's not the battery. Would I be right?

Would appear not to be the battery in that case, intermittent fuel or ignition problem so, yuk. Coils perhaps ? Friends Clio has an intermittent prob due to them and he is to tight to change them.

Well had it at the garage today and had it hooked up to machine and only fault that showed up was the air inlet/duct. Mechanic checked it and saw a tear in it so we are hoping that was the problem. Also had a tip from someone that may help people with similar Renault problems (and there seems to be a lot of people with them) When starting the car turn the key to the on position and leave it for a few seconds before starting the car. Have been doing this all day today and might be coincidence but no problems starting it today.

Same thing again today so wasn't the air duct:mad: Really don't know what to do with it at this stage only bought it few months ago and it has been so unreliable. Got stranded the other day with 3 kids and I'm pregnant!! NEVER get a Renault!!

Sorry to hear that Foxy.......two last things that might be worth checking....on mine (or my wife's to be more accurate) we examined the two connectors to the battery and noted that there was a slight bit of play on one of the connections..

Finally, I don't mean to insult you by suggesting a "no brainer", but on occasion I used to have a similar problem with a megane I had.... the immobilizer kicks in if the door is opened but the car not started. To overcome this just lock and unlock the doors via the key fob (assuming that your is a key fob type...)

Any very finally, congrats on the new baby, having four kids is loads of fun, I've four daughters between 2 and 7, they keep us busy!

i had a 95 laguna 1.8 if you stopped the car and took out the key it would not start until it was locked and then locked because of the imobiliser

Yeah we had a Renault before with the immobiliser problem but this seems to be different. Before with a laguna it wouldn't even try to start but this time its is ticking over just not starting. Have tried opening and closing the doors with the key and even left it for half an hour before opening it again but its still not starting. Will only start with a jump. Battery has been tested and two mechanics have looked at it but can't find anything wrong:( Don't really know where to go from here.

Thanks Irishgrover! I have 3 Boys and suspect this might be another!

Have you another car or somewhere you can borrow a battery you know is working?

Mine showed all the signs of a battery that was fine , but it was fooked.

Those symptoms sound quite like a TDC (flywheel sensor) issue . Meganes and Lagunas can have this and from a quick google, it looks like that model of Espace can too.

Was with a different mechanic today:rolleyes: and he thinks this is the problem too. Going back to where I got it tomorrow though to let them fix it.
