I am looking to buy a jeep for around 4 to 5 k . I am considering the above two around 02 to 04 . Any experiences good or otherwise on either would help me decide. Have seen an 03 Santa fe for 5k and like it.;)

Those Santa Fe's are terrible to drive imo, the 2.0 litre diesel is also prone to dual mass flywheel issues which are expensive to replace. The X-trail is better imo but the 2.2 dci is known to eat turbos, happed to someone at work.

I'd avoid both to be honest and take a look at something like this:

The turbo failures on the X-Trail are confined to the newer 136 bhp engines from early 2004 onwards. They are a lot nicer to drive than the Santa Fe of that era too.

I don't like any of these 4x4 type jeeps but my brother had A 07 X trail for a couple of years and if ever I was going to buy a 4X4/jeep it would without doubt be an X trail.

Always popular, but more and more of them on the roads these days!
