Can anyone please please help?

    My laptop has just died.

It is giving me this message

    Stop c00002la
    Fatal system error
The windows logon process system process terminated with a status of
the system has been shut down.

Sounds serious, what do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

Thats a windows error, not a bios error. So might only be your windows that bunched. Might be easily fixed.

Is there anything important on the laptop, is it backed up. Do you have the original install disks?

Thanks BostonB for the really speedy reply.

There is nothing important on the laptop really just the usual but nothing that I'm too worried about.

I don't have the original disks, do you think I could have it repaired or is it fatal?

    Thanks again.

    Silvermoon.

My guess would be its very unlikely to be fatal.

    How old is this laptop?

    Its a dell inspiron 1525.

I have it for 2 years and 7 months.

Hasn't given any trouble until now but of course when I need it.............

If you don't have th install disks you can probably boot into a Dell recovery

    http://oem.windowsreinstall.com/dell/dell_vistahdd.htm

What OS is it, XP, Vista, Windows 7?

    It's vista.

I can't do anything with it now as the message is still there and just wont let me get past it.

I'm not great with computers (as you prob guessed)

Thanks so much BostonB for the link,
maybe I need to bring it to a repair place?????

Try reboot ,hold down f8 for 8 seconds, then use arrow keys, up,down, enter, select directory services restore ,wait takes about 5,6 minutes to load up vista in safe mode.

AT THE worst case, you might have to reinstall vista from the hardrive .

the best way forward is to boot to command prompt (or failing this use windows startup disk and boot to recovery console) and run chkdsk /r try rebooting again after this .. if this doesnt work you could try a repair reintall and your data should be ok as long as you do not format.

o/t directory services restore mode is intended for domain controller computers only and in fact it wont do any good on a client pc..

Sorry for not getting back to you before now.

It is working (sortof) at the moment.

Was fine for the last few days until I started it up this morning
and the error message came back -
switched off for a while and then it came on and seems ok.

Thanks to all for your help and advice.

    Silvermoon.
