Fare dodgers

Myself, the wife and our two kids were in Bundoran yesterday and decided to jump on a little tourist train that travels around the town by the beach, funfair, etc.

We were charged 15 euro for two adults and two kids and just as we were about to leave, a family of two drunk adults and five screaming, filthy kids flagged down the train and jumped on. The young guy collecting the money approached them and was handed ten euro by the loudmouth mother. He said "the kids are 2.50 each too", to which the mother said "they're all under three"!

He just gave her a knowing smile and laughed, walked back and started the train. Cue twenty minutes of screaming kids getting their full money's worth while we sat like fools putting up with food being thrown all around the train.

What should you do? Insist the parents pay their money, ask for a refund for your own kids or just say nothing and vent your anger on boards! :(

Ask for a refund full stop, you will only get a box in the head by the sounds of it if you insist the parents pay their money.

send an e-mail to the operators and let them know that their employee is letting people away with not paying fares.

    Common sense. Thank you.

You were happy enough to hand over the full fare at the start.

What do you care what other people paid?

If it annoyed you that much you should have walked straight up to the driver and said 'My kids are under 3 too, same as hers.' and got a refund.

Reporting him to his employers? Very petty, imo.

Build a fcuking bridge and get over it.

So some people got away with a few quid... big deal. The guy was being decent, and you're going to try get him fired? Nice. What's he supposed to do anyway, ID some young kids???

Living in this country is a complete rip-off, and a few quid off for a large family is hardly the crime of the fcuking century. You just sound bitter tbh.

I was happy to hand over the fare as that's what it was.

I care because my kids were charged and all her over three's got on free.

It did annoy me but Im not going to stop a kids fun train, make a big scene and ruin my kids fun.

Why is it petty? If you were running a company and your employees were'nt charging people you would love to know.

I agree i was charge £20 for a meal in a wee caffee in donegal , the same type of meal would cost £5 here..

    +1

    Ask yourself which is worse?
Some lad letting a mother off with a few quid or you costing the lad his job, in the middle of a recession, for performing said action?
    That would be shameful.

I think this has more to do with the kids behaviour rather than the payment. I personally would have been put out if screaming kids got on the train for free. Some people just aren't very good at being parents or indeed decent members of society.

Plus with this type of customer, unless you're the owner of a business, it's almost not worth the hassle.

Ha ha, another charity case lover .

Why go out and work and hand over most of your earnings to a corrupt government and then get shafted left right and centre by everyone, even a bloody kids train driver! ;)

Can I pop around to your workplace and take something free of charge, would hardly be a crime of the fcuking century.

    Fool.

They were charged. And they were told they were under 3. Would you like to see their papers?

It's nice that you have the employers best interests at heart though.

By the sound of things he was doing it as otherwise there would have been a confrontation. Which would you prefer, to pay a bit more and get on with the journey of for your kids to see a row break out as the train waited for the police to arrive? He did the right thing.

No you can't because unless your a fcuking idiot, you can see it's not the same thing. Am I a charity case lover, or am I the guy burning up over it 24 hours later?

Report the guy for letting giving a parent a discount?????

What the hell is wrong with you???
If everyone did that we'd be living in a society where everyone is like that guy from 'In Bruges':"Entry Is five euros!!"

You sound quite emotional and aggressive son. Anyway, when can I pop around to your workplace to take something of the equivalent value and see what your employer thinks?

You need to stop taking life so seriously. The young lad knew they were intoxicated and didnt want a confrontation after all why should he when he is likely getting paid peanuts. So he got a tenner off them which isn't bad and called it quits.

If you had of been as obnoxious with your kids you would likely have saved yourself 7.50 also, however, your a NICE guy and paid.

Its life scumbags exist get over it!

in fairness anyone not paying pushes up the prices for others, it's the same with any kind of service. so I can see why it's a bit annoying.

I also can understand why the guy collecting fares left it go... they don't sound like the kinda people to have an argument with!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭greeno

Exactly, the poor lad working was lucky he got the tenner and didn't want any further grief. In his position I'd have done exact same thing.

Just know your the bigger man bohsboy ;)

If you considered yourself shafted it's because you hadn't the balls to do what she did.

On another note 15 quid for a train trip around Bundoran is fu*king extortion. You could walk it in 15 mins.

    This.

If, however, the guy had known the family and was just letting them away with it AND didn't offer you the same courtesy by, perhaps informing you of the discount regardless, then you'd have the right to be pissed at him. As it is it's just another example of this type of scum getting away with ****ty behavior.

@ the thought someone got something free that they had to complain
& even think of getting a guy fired for being nice.

If you're willing to pay e15 to avoid a 15min walk I suppose
you would be angry at appearing that extra bit more foolish :p

    Not angry, more annoyed.
You pay the few quid for the kids to enjoy sitting on a train, getting out of the rain. Bit of fun for them waving at people like yourself battling the rain and wind.

But on a side note, how can someone have 5 kids under the age of three? Did'nt appear to be any twins or triplets among the varying age group.

how can someone have 5 kids under the age of three? It has been known to happen. Woman has two fraternal twins 30 months of age and another child 18 months.
Her brother travelling with her has a child of 31 months and 19 months.
Thus I underlined someone, there were two persons not one.
Brother and sister were only exampes, cousins, neighbours, buddies also applies.

There are examples of this in our area. Our neighbour had first twins and 12 months later another child. Next doors had a 13 month child, around the same time, their second child was born.

A bus driver was suprised the first time when two of the four parents boarded with these five children under three.
As was posted this ticket seller in Bundoran knew these two adults.
