Taxation - where is the motivation to work hard when approximately 50% of your higher earnings are deducted from your paycheck? And that's before you consider VAT, stamp duty, debit / credit card duties, petrol, cigarette and alcohol duties and tv licence fees. It seems everytime you turn a corner in Ireland there's a minister waiting to dip his hand in your pocket.

I lived in Ireland for 25 years before I left and I'd love to return, but I can't think of a good reason to do so.

Far right traditionalist anti-everything that might be considered progressive types who use the term "PC brigade" as a response to anything logical or reasonable.

Hello, I live in the Caribbean. Income tax is almost negligible here, but I'd still like to live in Ireland soon if I could get a job again, and didn't have to hand over so much of my paycheck to the government. Didn't see that debate on newstalk - is it on their website?

Not sure about the website, god i was away and was hearing snippets of news , some analysis was complaining about how income tax in ireland was dealt with , i.e. the bands weren't right. How long are you there? What do you do, if you don't mind me asking, i'm on a very serious look at my situation and what to do about it right now, sorry for all the q's!

By European standards we have low PAYE and PRSI, compare to the UK as an example. High enough VAT and duties though!

    Change one thing? FF.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

The general lawless mindset that exists & is tolerated as norm here, right from the average joe jaywalking across the street to the minister lying under oath.

I'd change the weather and move the island to either america or england.

Cut social welfare incrementally, say 10% each year you're on it.
Give people an increasing incentive to find work.

That is sweet. I would have around an extra €1000 in my pocket every month if I lived in Ireland, but at the moment even that would not tempt me back.

The law so that anyone caught selling illegal drugs or bringing in illegal drugs into the country can be executed.

No ifs, no buts... I'll be first to pull the god-damn lever on them as they sit in an electric chair.

I'd make our education system amazing, and then everyone would be intelligent enough to get things done by the end of it.

    the amount of scumbags!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭JaneLane

I'd change the passiveness that we have regarding important issues.

What really annoys me is that people are perfectly happy to sit back and watch the government screw this country over and do nothing but moan about it and when it comes to making a stand, we don't.

If people actually decide to protest nowadays, the first thing people do is give out about them!

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

i would change this thread and make it better.

and then if i had time i'd set up something so i can win the 2028 presidential elections.

You think ecstasy and weed are ravaging this nation to the extent that their vendors should be put to death?

    SPAR. That is all.

I'd change the passive attitude of the people in this country.

Bring the fight to the Government, bring the fight to the scumbags, not stand idley by complaining about something you can change but won't do anything about.

The Public Sector Unions ability to negotiate wages for their members. They're still living in dreamland, and still a danger to the recovery of our economy, with their selfish attempts to keep wages at crazily high levels for a lot of their members. I'd replace their ability to negotiate wages with perhaps some sort of central EU committee to do the same job.

    The Minister of Health.

You know what mardy,i think if she was left alone in this post she would sort the hse out , in fairness no other politician in the past 5/6 has gone near (health) with a barge pole , i for one say fair play m. harney, at least she is giving it a good go....imo it is the hardest post in the government.
