"Undulatus asperatus"

An amazing and beautiful "new" type of cloud....

Undulatus asperatus (or alternately, asperatus) is a cloud formation, proposed in 2009 as a separate cloud classification by the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society. If successful it will be the first cloud formation added since cirrus intortus in 1951 to the International Cloud Atlas of the World Meteorological Organization.[1] The name translates approximately as roughened or agitated waves.

According to that Wiki article, they are related to the 'undulatus' clouds. I didn't think undulatus was a a cloud type, more of a feature within the main cloud formations (Cirrus/Alto/Stratus/)

I may wll be wrong but I would guess that the Undulatus asperatus cloud in the first pic may be related to stratocumulus.

By the way, the guy behind the Cloud Appreciation Society, Gavin Pretor-Pinney, has a fantastic book that I highly recommend called The Cloudspotter's Guide. He also did a documentary with the BBC not too long ago which also touched on "Undulatus asperatus".

Ooo man. Thats unreal. It looks like CGI. Under what kind if conditions do they form? I would imagine during a TS, downdrafts to punch a hole in low stratus cloud? Guessing obviously:D

I wonder how they are photographed? As I guess it's not just me but they look so unreal in some photos
