There was a carrier update today. You'll get it if you plug the phone into itunes.

Go to settings, then Phone, Then 3 Ireland service, and there's the planet 3 link. :)

Thanks, had found that. Very useful stuff there. Great to be able to check my balance like that. What about using the services on it, are they free or do they come out of your flexi-units?

If its anything like VF, it will know and you just use accordingly?

Anywhere inside Planet 3 is free including previewing on the 3 music store and any videos you don't even need credit, , not sure about skype and msn support I have my doubts. (music previews don't seem to be working on iphone, not surprised it's in competition to itunes so you'd need a normal 3phone to access it)

Is this your first time on planet 3?

Edit: there nothing like Vodafone :0)

It is. I'm with 3 the last month. Skype doesn't work through planet3 either, but that doesn't bother me.

The only good thing about VF was the !Live service. Data roaming was brilliant.

You had to pay for live though, bet planet 3 isn't bad in comparison and you've also got data roaming in some countrys for free.

No, I had a 1GB data add-on, and !Live was free as part of it. Pity I'm going to France on holidays this year, I guess I'll have to make sure its Italy next year.

Are the APN settings unavailable, I presume they are set to 3ireland.ie not 3internet you need for roaming.

    Cheers

If you are jailbroken you can re-enable to apn settings page by adding the following code to your carrier.plist file.
<key>AllowEDGEEditing</key>
    <true/></code>
For me it was located in
    /var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/Hutchison_ie.bundle/carrier.plist

Make sure you make a backup first though.

Just get one of the new French iPad SIMs (all 3 nets offering them).

Most 3 products are preset to 3internet, these days. Besides, tonight, 3ireland.ie is working perfectly on 3UK. Heck, I even set it to tre.it and that worked too.

    Great, worth downloading it so.

I was afraid I would be in bother if I was in the UK or NI.

My phone asked me did I want to download new carrier settings yesterday but I just ignored it.

I might accept it if it asks me again.

    Thanks

With the carrier update does tethering still work.

This would be the main reason why I would not download the new settings

Can someone who has downloaded the new carrier file tell me if it is working.

    Thanks

Yes, tethering has been working since 3.1.3 and is still working on 4.01 with new carrier settings. Again, have no fear.

I got the carrier update aswell.

I'm pretty annoyed because whenever I couldn't connect on one APN I'd change to the other. Can't do that now!

Does this include all the settings for MMS?

It does: my iPhone 4 now has the camera icon in Messages (I hadn't configured it deliberately because I never use pointless and expensive MMS.....)

Is there any way to revert back before the carrier settings, being able to change the apn easily is pretty important to me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭demon3

Today I got a carrier update on my unlocked 3GS with 3 Ireland sim in it and the update has disabled most of the network options including:
    3G option
    APN Settings
    Theadering
    MMS

The phone is now stuck on 3ireland.ie APN with no MMS and no theadering.

What really get me on this is two things, firstly three disabling features on an SIM unlocked phone. Secondly I have a 10gig broadband add on on my aim and I can no longer use it.

When I called their HELPDESK they where useless, call me back in 48 hours...

Going to restore the phone later to wipe the carrier update which is a major pain.

Don't install this carrier update on your phone if you want to use network settings or send mms.

MMS works for me after the carrier update both to send and recieve MMS. Great as I could never got it to work before.

I must have got a different update, in about mine is listed as "3 Ireland 7.0", and MMS is defiantly disabled, not available in messaging (no camera button) and no longer an option in the camera itself.

The 3 homepage was always available using the UK URL and 3ireland.ie settings so no addition there. And with the APN now locked I am locked in a proxy'd sudo internet where all my traffic is through a limited proxy which blocks certain traffic and websites. And with theadering disabled I can't use it as my backup for my home internet. At least until I restore the firmware.

But these are not the biggest issues for me, the biggest issue is Three/Apple disabling functionality on a phone that was not sourced from 3 Ireland and is an official network unlocked phone. But then this is Apple for you, wanting providers to be able to control the experience you have with their phones. I will have to wait until there is a V4 jailbreak I can use to free myself again from the chains of Apple.

I wanted to get the iPhone 4 on three, but knowing now the limitations they are going to put on the phone (even if I buy it sim free) I am leaning towards WM7 or Android as my next platform.

I am really disappointed lately with the quality of Apples kit, the poor coding of their software and the controlling nature of this once rebellious/revolutionary company.

I read somewhere the other day someone asking if the iphone 4 was Apples windows vista...??

Anyway enough of my rant, I amreally pissed at Apple and Three today... :)

Where do I find out the version of the update.

Found it, I have 3 Ireland 7.1 in Settings, General, About.

    Cheers

What's "theadering"? If its tethering you mean, its still enabled on mine after the update, and I know have MMS where I didn't have it before?

    yes... :o

It would appear its a version issue with the carrier updates, the version I have is 7.0 and has these functions disabled and 7.1 has them enabled.

Restored my firmware last night and activated with my old O2 sim, and restored my last backup, now I am back to where I was before Three's carrier update installed yesterday using the O2 V7.0 Carrier details with full access to all menu options for network and MMS to change as I please. My three sim is back in set up for three network and I will not be installing the carrier update again :) . Mind you now its OTA update I get the popup notification on the phone every time I go into the about section which is a bit of a pain.

So all good now and I have decided I will not be getting iPhone 4 on three now that I know how they lock the phone down. Stick with the 3GS, just recieved my applecare today so its covered for faults untill october 2011.

? For quite some time now, we're on v9.0/9.1, depending on carrier.

NP: it depends on the carrier as to how their settings are presented. For example, my O2 UK allows me to edit the APN -but the tethering option disappears.

I know you are: I am illustrating how different carriers throughout Europe choose to hide or reveal options in the settings menu.

ok apologies! do you know why they do that?

I cant put in mms or internet settings in the iphone now for 3 .. :(

ok apologies! do you know why they do that?

I cant put in mms or internet settings in the iphone now for 3 .. :(

Not a notion, I guess 3 IRL feel they have configured it correctly. O2 UK for example, leave theirs user-configurable as their prepay settings are not the same as their postpay(though why they require the user to change their PAYG and can't set the carrier settings accordingly is beyond me), others push advice of an update to their settings OTA, and the iPad allows all to change their APN if required -this is especially useful in order to change Vodafone IRL's APN to the Live! one both at home and abroad.

In the case of 3IRL, sometimes it is necessary to toggle between 3ireland.ie and 3internet, so I wish they would allow manual configuration on iPhone 4 as the iPad allows. I also like to use 3 Italy's APN with Ireland, for example, because the latter allows me to send Vodafone Ireland webtexts using Jelly or EirText as both of the 3IRL APNs prevent this.

    PITA.
