Comprehensive insurance - what are the key things for your policy to cover?

    Hi

My car insurance renewal time is rollling round again and my current broker has sent me a renewal quote that's up 30% from last year (no claims in the intervening period, circumstances unchanged except car one year older and I've one more year's NCB). So I've been doing the ring around and most quotes are even higher than my renewal. However, one is about €100 less, almost the same as I paid last year. It seems broadly equivalent to my current cover, includes windscreen, breakdown assist, same excess, etc, but the one main difference is it does not include "optional legal cover" and "optional personal effects", both of which seem to be on my current policy. So are these important or not? Is it worth saving €100 on this year's price if these two items are not covered? What do you think are the essential elements to include in your comprehensive cover?

    Thanks

If I was looking for fully comp, the main things id be looking for are:

    Windscreen cover
    breakdown cover
    Full NCB protection
    Driving other cars cover

Im sure theres others that ive left out (i normally get TPFT as I drive low value cars making fully comp a but pointless)

Personal effects is in case you leave a nice jacket in your car and it'll get stolen. Or in case you give a lift to someone in nice suit, and this person will tear his suit somewhere in your car somehow.... Of course conditions depends on insurer.
My insurer offerd it to me for extra 3.60 euros, but I didn't take it because i thought, it'll be better to spend 3.60 on a nice pint.

Legal cover will probably provide you with legal advice in case of any problem after accident. Anyway paying 100 euros extra just to have it is not worth it - in my opinion....

    Check other things.
Some insurers charge extra money for any amendments in a policy (ex changing a car, adding drivers permanently or temporarely. Let's say for any change of a car on your policy is a fee of 40 euros (+ diffenece in premium). If you plan to change cars often, don't take that policy.
Also some insurers charge extra to keep full comprehensive cover while driving in the EU. In some others it's for free.

Pretty much read all the policy and decide what's imporatant for you and what is not.

They are not really important to be honest , but if your concerned most insurers could add them on for extra.
