    Shops:
    Maplin, PCworld/Dixions/Curry, Peats, maybe Click.ie

Online more choice and probably cheaper.

Thats great - are they straightforward enough to pop inside the dreambox ?

Connection is simple if the DM 800 actually takes a SATA drive.

I have no idea if it needs some strange Linux incantation or if it has an automount Daemon (Linux runs on Demons) to make it actually go. Or what of the myriad filesystems Linux supports that it expects.

I think searching a Dreambox forum would help.

Yes the D800 is designed to take both 2.5" SATA Hard Disk and eSATA.

It's simple enough to pop in, although pretty tight to get the drive latch back down. One thing to consider is some sort of cooling as the HD in the DM800 gets fairly hot. I have external laptop fans cooling mine. Once installed you can initialise the disk from within the Blue Menu, no command line needed - although you could do it that why if you're comfortable.

I got that sorted. Pretty straightforward in the end.

Pretty cool feature of the DM800HD is that it allows multiple recordings 4SD and 2HD off the same transponder even though only one tuner!

Mate - the hard drive is important - you'll want a quiet and low energy type to keep noise and heat to a minimum. You do not need a top spec hard drive for this function - the data transfer rate of entry level models is more then adequate for watching\recording HD. And a 5400 rpm model will spin up quicker and produce less noise & heat then a 7200 rpm version. I went with this 500 GB model - perfect for the DM and whisper quiet.

I got one in Maplins - they have a special deal on at the moment were they are selling a Samsung 500GB SATA for €90 reduced from €169. Its running pretty quiet - just ordered myself a dreamcooler to keep things in check. Its the tuner which seems to give off the most heat for me and not the hard disk.

Have you a clone or is it the genuine DM. I'm in the same position and looking to add a hard disk to my clone DM800.
Do you reckon I need to bUy a cooler as well I thought it was build in?

I have an official box and not a clone.

Official boxes do not come with fans.

I am only getting a dreamcooler as the Hard disk is obviously going to increase the heat from my machine but as I said its the tuner which emits the most heat from my box and not the hard disk.

There is a chap on ebay who makes dreamcoolers especially for D800s and sells them for £12 with free shipping - cant go wrong there.

Just to add that recording in HD eats up space - 41.2GB for five HD films!

Barr I would recommend 500GB minimum if you plan on recording HD films.

That will give you plenty of space to play around with.

Just thinking that a SkyHD box which is 500GB only has 250GB for personal storage which seems rather low.

Just to let you'se know that cooler arrived and there is a big difference in temperature coming from my box - worked a treat and the size of the plate is perfect.

How loud is the fan? Can you hear it when nothing is switched on in the room?

Also, does it run 24\7 or does it switch off when the DM is in standby?

Not that loud - I usually would have the tv or laptop on though. It does not power off with standby though from my knowledge of the subject there is not an external fan that does unless you mod it via the scart port. If you shutdown the box then it goes off. As I said above I am quite pleased with it as its keeping my box much cooler. Before if I put my hand over the tuner it was extremely hot but now I would say that its more luke warm. I think that there is a way to see the temp of your box but dont remember how to access the menu!

EDIT: Just to add that I am pleased it does not turn off via standby as I personally do a great deal of recording that way and if it were to turn off then it wouldnt be of much use to me.

Thanks mate. I would have thought that it would come back on when recording? If only...

There is an add-on called fanmate that is supposed to control the internal fan but I don't think it can do anything for the external one.

I dont think Dream have understood the heating problem because the new 800 se does not have a fan as far as I know. Dream have also noe stopped production of the 800 so its only whats left in the retailers.

Nice little fan that, might get one myself.
I built a USB fan out of an old intel CPU cooler, that sits on top of my DM800HD to keep it cool but that one looks quiet nice.
