Hp pavillion dv9720 not working

Hello, I recently have had problems with this notebook. It is just out of warranty, I brought it back to a well known retailer basically said no problem will get it fixed but its gonna cost you.
I will take them to the small claims court, but would like to establish the problem before I go to the man/woman with the big wig.
The notebook basically will not start up, theres power on, led lights etc but the screen is blank/black. The last time it was workiing the battery got so hot the fan came on repeatedly( I cheched with hp and they said my battery was not part of the recall), I actually powered it down because I felt it would go on fire. The next day it would not start up. I don't want to bring it to a repair shop incase that will invalidate any claim I have. Any thoughts or known problems with this unit would be much appreciated thank you.

The battery, wouldn't cause the fan to switch on the , fan is to keep processor cool as it generate a lot of heat .Laptops can get very hot . Have you tried ruining the laptop of the mains, to determine weather it is battery or not . Just remove the battery and pug it in to mains.

Thanks for the quick reply, yes I did remove the battery and plugged into mains but still would not start up. The screen is blank but you can still hear the start up sound as if waiting for the blue screen to appear to enter my password but this does not arrive and remains blank/black.
I 've even tried a hard re start but no joy.

Your GPU is probably fried like thousands of other DV9xxx laptops. Just google nvidia defect and have a read, perhaps it applies to you.

    Thank you.

Read some articles regarding the nvidia defect very interesting, I didn't realise there was such a problem on these. Proving this on the other hand is difficult unless the retailer takes it back which they wont unless I give them a wod of cash. This leads me to the smc and possible 6 months without it, luckily i'm using my netbook as a spare hp again, will I ever learn lol.
Strange when I looked at the bottom of my notebook it says model number dv 9700, and then there's a sticker displaying dv9720 next to it, and to the front right of my screen on the black border it writes hp pavillion dv9000.

Shouldn't be too hard to prove, there's loads of posts all over the web from thousands of people with notebooks like yours with the exact same problem. Nvidia themselves set aside millions of $ to deal with these sorts of claims.

I'm personally going to small claims court route with mine, hopefully will get some success out of it.

Again, as per my other posts on this issue read

    http://www.hplies.com/index.php

    http://www.nvidiadefect.com

Im trying to get people together on this but posts are all over the place.

I will post a new topic on this issue this evening.

I will be taking HP to court aswell so lets see what we can get together to do about this issue.

    Feel free to PM me.

I think now after realising the problems with the dv9xxx series I will be looking for a replacement or refund when I go to the smc. A repair using a defective gpu unless it is a new redesigned and not the spare parts from the original batch is more likely to go faulty again. I think there's enough research out there on the internet to show this.
I've being advised by citizens information my contract is with the retailer who I purchased the unit from, and that is who I 'll be taking to the smc, its only €15 I think, and the process is ok.
I wouldn't have the appetite to take on hp but I wish you the best of luck.

    Hi Pat,

The Consumer Association advised me the same that the contract is with the retailer, but the fault is a manufacturing fault i.e. the chipset/GPU combination produced more heat than the provided heatsink/fan assembly could safely vent therefore causing the GPU solder to mealt & seperate from the motherboard.

As the fault is a result of this there is also a possible case against HP. (Dont forget that eventhough HP deny it, they were fully aware of the issue by the 2nd ¼ of 2007 & should have recalled ALL the affected machines, instead they stayed quiet leaving us the face the misery of €1300 paperweights)

If nothing else it is downright dangerous - could have / may have caused burns to the user if laptop was resting on users 'lap'.

Anyways, may I ask what the 'smc' is?

Also if you would like to become part of the demand for satisfaction please PM me.

    Regards

    James
