Hi I am considering buying one of these Range Rover 2.5 diesel jeeps. I don't know a lot about them other than they look well and have a pretty high spec and are very comfortable. The prices seem to have reduced considerably, probably due to high tax and running costs. I would appreciate any info on these 99 to 00 ones and what is the best model to choose. I would also like an idea about running costs and reliability. :p

My Dad used to have one of these , cursed the day he bought. The air suspension are trouble and will empty your pockets.
Make sure it lowers properly when parked and all the suspension settings work as they should.

as above, the air suspension is a total mare, dodgy electrics, alarms that drain batterys, engine that is totally asmathic re size of jeep......avoid like the plague says me.....they are cheap for a reason and as per the expression, "there are no free lunches....."

I would agree on the air suspension. I had a 1998 model back in 2002, bought from a LR dealer in Dublin. It went back to them twice on the back of a truck when the air "collapsed", luckily repaired under warranty. The dealership was fantastic in their level of service. I kept it for 12 months and they bought it back off me for not too much of a loss to me. When it was going well it was a great joy to drive.

I had the 4.0 HSE......the alarm sucked the life out the batt and then when totally flat required a flatbed back to dealer to do a ecu reset......a total piece of poo. Very comfy when it worked.....petrol though was a complete joke.....12mpg around town.

Have been running a toyota vx landcruiser for a couple of yrs.....bomb proof.....capable of massive mileage......little rough comparied to RR.....has never missed a beat......couldnt say enough about it.

Thanks for the excellent advice, went to see one of these jeeps. Air suspension was knackered and he had 'converted' it to ordinary suspension. Air con needed to be refilled. Drove the jeep and was not impressed with the power. Will move on to something else. Not sure what jeep though ?:D;)

Converting it to the ordinary suspension is a good thing at least that eliminates any future probs.

What price was it as a matter of interest ? Did you test drive auto or manual

you sure air con only needs a refill ,air con compressor commonly go aswell and very pricey to fix also expect 20-22 mpg they are a thirst beast , and lots of electrical faults

Was an auto 99 and was asking 5k. Am now thinking of a Santa fe or xtrail, would welcome opinions.

Definitely OTT for a messed about one, €1500 would be nearer the mark! UK book price on these is £2k - 8k but it's a funny market here. There are some gems amongst these, trouble is finding them. Good ones will have had the problems sorted (mostly!) but it is one for the enthusiast.

Air suspension problems are usually down to owners ignoring a leaking air bag and the pump works overtime until it burns out, stupid really, bags are cheap and easy to replace, pumps aren't.

Big jump from RR to the 2 new suggestions.

What about the landcruiser. Was in one in Malaysia that drove n bad tracks the old 4.2 diesel normally aspirated. even after t got rolled in a river by mistake it got cleaned up and still pulled over everything put in front of it.

Bullet proof is not the word.

With that budget a Land cruiser. You will get a good one for that money.

    A Land Rover is NOT a Jeep.

    Not every 4 X 4 is a Jeep.

In fact, there are very few Jeeps in Ireland.

Poor value for 5k . My Dad bought a Santa Fe after the RR. 2.0 Crdi in Auto. 70k miles up on since and not one problem.

People on here dont like the Santa Fe , but from my experience they are trouble free and nice in auto.

There is a good reason there are so few Jeeps in Ireland

They are crap. You can keep them US.

We all no what he meant by Jeep

Most of the people I know with a 4x4 call it a Jeep - its like saying hoover for your vacuum cleaner.

I wouldn’t be pulling people up on it :)

As a Land Rover fanatic I gave up correcting people soon after moving here!

Call it a jeep on a UK forum though and you will be flamed big time, on some forums jeep is even treated as a swearword :D

I've had a RR since Jan. It has never left me down. On average around town with a heavy foot like mind you can expect 22 to 25 mpg. On a long trip you can average 30mpg. Not bad for something that's 2.5tons in weight with an engine that puts out only 130 odd bhp. In saying all that I've found it no slouch either & mine's not chipped. Just returned from a week in the Uk where at 65mph according to the obc i was returning 34.9mpg (not bad). Now you do have to look out for problems ie air suspension, dodgy electrics etc. There is quite a few lemons out there but also some gems if you know what to look for. Dealers over here are ridicously priced but bargains can & have been found. Mine was off the road for two days recently getting rear bumper painted & i was driving the missus 06 zafira, I couldn't wait to get back into the RR & it's a 98 with 160k.

I would balk at calling a range rover a jeep as well tbh, but I know what he meant.
I had a neighbour who had a great RR for years, never any bother, then changed it for a newer model (second hand) and the thing spent more time in the garage than on the road.

Also an actual Jeep is probably one of the few 4x4's that manages to be LESS reliable than a RR...

Spheres can go on the 100 VX after c. 80k miles. Eur 2000 to replace them. Torque converter on pre June 2000 build will also go at about 80k miles.

The GX is easier on the pocket.
