    Hi,

I bought a second hand car from a garage, ended up needing to spend €1500 to fix gasket head and some smaller bits and pieces. I got it done at a different garage. Do I have any comeback against the selling garage?

I doubt it. Did you speak to the garage who provided the warranty before having the work done elsewhere?

    Nope, don't trust them frankly.

I understand what you're saying, but I can't see how they could be held liable for a fault which they weren't given the opportunity to diagnose/fix. One exception would be if you bought the car from a main dealer with a warranty that was valid throughout the dealer network, but in that case you wouldn't have had to pay at all.

But should the car not be in reasonable mechanical condition to start with?

You have to give the garage opportunity to put it right. They would quite rightly laugh at you if you turn up with a big bill without having even shown them the fault on the car.
For all you know, they may well have carried out the work without question.

Not really, that's what the warrenty is for. Sounds like you've gone arseways about this, should've went to the dealer you bought from first.

sometimes garages would buy a warranty from a company and then add the price on to the selling price. might be an idea to ask.

No, the warranty is against faults that occur afterwards. But yes, the OP should have brought the car back to the garage who issued the warranty.

How long after you bought the car did the head gasket go in it?

The t&c will be in the warranty booklet, i'd have a read through that.

No comback whatsoever, if he didnt tell the garage he bought it from about the problem and give them a chance to fix it before getting it done elswhere thats his problem!

As i've said before, that depends on the warranty. Best thing is for the OP to read the t&c of the warranty.

No you should have gone back to the garage you got it off. How long was the warranty for? and how long after you got the car did it give trouble?

I really dont think he was givin warranty with the likes of mapfre or that as he would know exactly where he stood and would not be here asking the question. I would say it was just off the garage and if so more than likely no warranty booklet, just "3mts or 3000km parts and labour on engine and gearbox only" (or something to that affect) written on his reciept. If the warranty was issued by the selling garage they DO NOT have to pay for this work he has had done.

If i sold him the car and this happened and he came back to me saying "my head gasket went last week, i got it done heres the bill for you to pay" he would not get very far, if he had of come to me when the paroblem presented itself in the first place the work would have been done by us provided the car was still within warranty period.
