Just doing rough calculations and around town with a bit of longer(country road driving) I'm getting around 30mpg out of the Golf.

That's a 1.4, admittedly the 18" wheels won't do it any favours, but is 30 mpg ok?

It's fully serviced with the plugs changed every 6k, well looked after engine.

I get that from a Terrno II Diesel 4x4.

I'd be of the opinion that your vehicle is a little heavy, that said, I do remember Top Gear doing a show where the 'fugal' 1.4 petrol was also surpassed by a more powerful diesel.

    I got 33+ from my e200 on a long run, and around 25 around town... That's a 2.0 auto:rolleyes:

This is 11 years old and as healthy as myself! The wheels must be the cause...

    Mark 4 1.4 75hp allegedly gets 41mpg
    Mark 3 1.4 60hp allegedly gets 40mpg
    Mark 4 1.9 TDI 90hp allegedly gets 54mpg

The source for that is Parkers.co.uk and with regards to the TDI my one does around that so they should be reliable enough.

Driving style will have an impact, but that sounds way too low. Have you double checked your calcs?

I would of guessed > 40 mpg, on the open road. That seems to be what the above user is getting too. Has it had an emissions test recently?

I still have my first mk3 outside 1.4 60hp 17 years old and I can guarantee you it gets way more than 40mpg. In fact when I switched to a mk4 I noticed an increase in weekly fuel costs of between 7 and €10.

Yeah 30mpg has to be way off. Calculations might be wrong?

Passed the NCT last year with flying colours. I use the STP cleaner in the tank bi annually, new back box etc. etc., I look after the car big time. I often take off quick in first (you have to with the wheels to get an bit of speed) but other than that I never drive it hard, go over 4k rpm etc. Nothing out of the ordinary except the wheels!

I get slightly better than that on a 1.6 similar engine.heavy enough car too for the engine don't forget. Gearing in them does it no favours. I reckon it's not far off the mark

    New back box you say!

I had a new back and middle put onto mine recently and noticed very quickly that I was using more fuel than I'm used to.

As it happens, around the same time I replaced my fuel filter and when I started the engine and she was still on a stand I noticed that they had done a **** job on the two joins, no sealant used and clamps were over tightened and she was pissing water from both joins.

Straight onto the phone, back in, job done properly and fuel consumption back to normal.

Worth a check with a flash light! Although you should here it.

Absolutely, Ive hit 60mpg a few times and 57 a few more times but keep in mind they are combined figures.

From whatmpg.co.uk in extra urban its meant to have hit 51 mpg and my diesel is 64 or something but that is verging on hyper-miling for me.
On urban the 1.4 gets just 31.

Then that is without DOUBT where your problem is.....:D

How did you find fitting it? I only have axle stands and did it before on a MK3 and it was a pain. That said I think it was the original so it would have been there A VERY LONG TIME.

Also, I've had a few golf's at this stage, 3 of which had alloys when I bought them and I can tell you each and every time I've replaced them with stock rims.
They look the part and all but 600+mls a week on Alloys and I can assure you you will notice it at the pump and even more so on daily pricking about.

Ah it was a bit of a pain, not too bad though. I just jacked it up, pulled it apart at the join (the worst part is twisting it to get it out over the back axle), and twisted the new one in, on with the two hangers, I used a bit of pipe and two clamps (4 euro) and a bit of sealer and bobs your uncle! Bought the back box privately (new) for 50 quid :P

From talking to lads in the trade the 1.4 Golf IV is underpowered for the body size & the wheels might not help what size are they? 225 235 40 18?? Had a 2001 TDI 6 speed & it was sooo easy on juice, have the same engine now in a 2001 Passat estate & am getting on average 55 mpg on a journey 60:)

They should be 245 and 235, but I've 225's all round...

I'll fill it up soon and get exact figures, I'll report back then.
