    Hi there,

Just wondering is there any books on tax for the self employed... Went in to the local book store and they offered a book on UK tax .... :p

I asked my accountant, and he says there's no point, as that is what he is there for.. But I would like to know the stuff myself, even if I still need him to sign off on things. topics I would like to know about ... VAT, income tax, PRSI, expenses, p45/60 etc etc etc...

Can anybody recommend a good book that covers this, or does one even exist?

    thanks in advance.
    J

    Hello J,

Can't think of a specific book off hand, but the www.revenue.ie website will have all you need - with good use of the search engine it will give you excellent info. Good news it's free - bad news it may throw up a lot more info you don't need. Definitely worth checking out though.

    IT 48 isnt bad www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it48.pdf

and Google IT 49 for VAT matters. Its well worth your while understanding whats going on even when hiring an accountant.

The particular queries you mention sound quite tax-based.

I'd strongly recommend a good tax text book. You want a practical one though, not something like tax summary or whatever.

Therefore, I'd recommend this. It shows how to prepare the various tax returns, and also give you an insight into how the liabilities are actually computed. I taught IATI students using this text, and they (and I ) found it very practical and useful

Granted, it costs a bit of money, rather than the revenue website stuff which is free.
