Morris Oxford '70 going free

My father has an old ’70 morris oxford which has been up on blocks in our garage since it retired from being our family car in 1991. It was in very good condition but naturally sitting idle for so many years has not been good to it. He bought it in England in 1973 for £650. The mileage is just over 200,000 miles. He replaced the engine about 18 months before he retired the car with an engine which had 60,000 miles on the clock. He has all the old log books etc.

I posted the ad above almost 2 years ago and while there was some interest there were no takers. The car is still in the garage (5 miles outside Mullingar) but is due to be collected in about 3 weeks for the scrap yard. I’m just offering it again in case anyone might now be interested in taking it away.

I have more photos if interested.

    Thanks in advance.

Indeed, this is coming up soon in Arlington. That reg is a late '77 westmeath reg alright.
    Saturday 7th August
    6.45pmArlington StadiumNational Banger A60 Amble
    2 Litre Stock Cars
    Ladies Bangers
Lightning Rods - Polleysport/Yokohama Tyre Series Round 9
    National Bangers - A60 Amble/Pre 75 1650cc limit (No Mk 2 Capris or Mk 3 Cortinas)

That A60 amble is an all A60 meet as far as i understand,a sort of retro banger race like it was in the 70s and 80s where practically every car was an A60. That car you are offering for free is like gold dust to a certain type of banger racer.

So how many BMC Farinas of all types were built? and how many survive, because if they are all being banger raced, then there must be nothing left!

There was many different versions,BMC badge engineering at its best really there being Austin Cambridge, Morris Oxford, Riley 4/72 and Wolseley 16/60 derivatives.

They were a hugely popular banger in their heyday as they were cheap, and plentifull, similar to the Cortina and Granadas that followed, the Mondeo is the current most popular car to race as they are just as disposible as the A60s used to be. My uncle has told me of stories where they used to go out in the afternoon to housing estates around London and collect as many as they needed to race for free,as the were so many MOT failures.

    Incidentally Wikipedia says
Austin A60 saloons assembled in Ireland by Brittain Smith of Portobello, Dublin 2 were identifiable by the use of Morris Oxford series VI tail-lights. The last of these were produced in 1970, and some were registered in 1971

well i hope the one posted here gets a new lease of life on the vintage show circuit and not the banger circuit

I remember my uncle having one in the early sixties, MZA 520 I think ( ok , so i am an anorak) he paid 250 for it . i remember the price being an anagram of the reg.

My other uncle had a variant of it, and my bro in law had a Riley ( 16/72 ?)
reg UIF 144 as I recall.

There was an MG version too, the Magnette...
The Riley was considered to be the best of the bunch: it combined the opulence of the Wolseley (walnut dash, leather etc) with the 'sportiness' of the MG

Is the car still available? I would not turn it into a racer. Always wanted to do one of these up. I am in Tullamore so not to far from you, would even skip across tomorrow to have a look. (to prove it would not be turned into a racer I will be driving my w124 (95)
    Thanks

Chances are if a person likes old cars well enough to have it as their daly drive, they are not going to use them in banger races.
    Just my view

On my son's laptop, he is automatically loged into boards, so I did not log out and log back into in my name. I am a member named B1gft. Am always on classic car section, reading more than writing, but a few old posts here.
Classic car to my son is 2005
(incase anyone asks, he knew I wrote that post)

Indeed,i agree totally, but you cant save everything, and what a guy does with his own property is his own buisiness. Iv seen many nice cars wrecked over the years,so im trying to save the few i can from rust and racers. If i had a rusty 200L that was past it for the road i would have no problem seeing it smashed up in a race, once everything good was removed from it. There is many cars raced that shouldnt be i agree, like this MK1 Granada, which seemed to be totally rust free as far as i could make out..
    IMG_0004-1.jpg

...and this Ford Dorset hearse which was custom built one off vehicle using Transit parts(axles and doors)..
    forddorsethearse.jpg

..but many of them are hanging like this Cokebottle pillarless Datsun 280C,a very rare car in good order, but this one is obviously past it unless you are a sado masochist with a welder.
    COKEBOTTLE280C_BANGER.jpg

Alot of the racers in england are Classic enthusiasts too and have as road cars A60s and other older cars,Cortinas,Granadas etc, even my uncle who raced in the 60s and 70s has a MK3 Zodiac, and a Wolseley 6/110,both cars used as racers in their time, though the MK3 Zodiac was mainly used as a stock car. A 6/110 won the Banger world final in 1986.

The main thing going for the A60 in the OP is it has an old Irish registration, maybe not its original from new but still a car worth keeping.
cv must include a welding certificate and a receipt for a welder ,if a receipt cant be found a photo of a welder must be included

And pictures of previous cars restored! Lol!

Thats one of my better restorations right there..............................:D:D

I got a few PM's very soon after I posted the offer and my Dad has given it away now. The person who is taking it is going to restore it, thankfully not banger race it. However, it was going to a scrap yard so even racing would be better than that. My Dad would naturally love to see it back to its former self.

As for the Reg, he bought it as a 2 or 3 yr old and had it in England for a couple of years. He then imported it. He said that etched on the window is the date of manufacture - 1969. He has the tax book anyway so it should all be there.

Thanks for all the interest, I must show my Dad the thread, he'd love all this chat about his car and others.
