My OH has a 04 passat tdi 100bhp, and in the last 6 months 'Emissions Workshop' has been coming up on the dash along with the orange engine light. It stays on for a short while, maybe a few hours and then goes off again. This happens weekly more or less. It continues to drive fine in every other respect. I crossed me fingers and brought it for nct last night, the warning stayed off and it passed the emmisions, altho failed on some other stuff. I didnt get to bring it to anyone beforehand. Have any of you had similar? is just a reset or did you endup repairing/replacing?

Its more than likely the Temp sender unit in the back of the engine manifold. I wrote a thread a while back on a how to for servicing the passat. I also included fitting a new temp sender unit. Relatively inexpensive part about 20 quid from the independant supplier 33 odd euro from main dealer including new O ring.

Its an odd symptom of the temperature sensor though. I had a bad one for 6 months and I never got a warning light, just the glow plugs didnt work when they should have and the temp gauge was being daft.

It looks like a bad glow plug is the issue in one of those links. So when the plugs do come on the fault registers, which makes sense because the problem seems to be intermittent.

From what I know the glow plugs come on at other times as you drive but the light doesnt come on. Its possible that one bad plug unbalances whatever it is the ECU is trying to do and you get bad emissions.

I had the luxury of access to VAGCOM which diagnosed the sensor for me. A diagnostic would tell you without a shadow of a doubt. The error reading will be logged as Temp Sensor - Intermittent usually on the ECU.

The OPS car also seems to have a on board computer and his symptoms are exactly the same as what occured on mine with the very audible beep and "Emissions workshop" appearing.

My previous car didnt have a computer and also had the same fault, the temp sensor used to be up and down like a yo yo.

It seems to be a GP issue anyway. Easy to fix either way.
