    From Breakingnews.ie:
The Government Information Service has built a new social networking-led internet platform based on Facebook and Twitter.

Under the new structure, called merrionstreet.ie, The Taoiseach and other Government Ministers will be in a position to tweet to the world regarding a number of issues.

Its hoped the move, which took five months to complete, will transform Government communications and providing a more dynamic web presence.

It is understood that the idea was adapted from models from the UK and the US where 10 Downing Street and the White House have similar websites.

GIS say the new resource will not be used as a political tool but instead as a place where people can access all related Government news, photos and updates.

It is believed the team has studied twitter and other social media if a tweet comes from the Taoiseach it will include the initials BC so that people will know it came from Brian Cowen himself.

    I love this bit:
if a tweet comes from the Taoiseach it will include the initials BC so that people will know it came from Brian Cowen himself.
Why doesnt he just sign it "An Taoiseach"??

The funny bit aside, I would love to know what this rehash of twitter/facebook that they spent 5 months developing, cost. That's the bottom line for me.

What I want to know is why it took a team 5 months! It takes 2 minutes to create a facebook/twitter page

EDIT: aah it's not actually on facebook/twitter, just based on the idea of them. Never mind :P

Because that won't be appropriate for Cowen to do in a few months time (the sooner the better)

Did that include the team of PR consultants, all on over 100k a year that spent the 5 months putting together media together.

I wouldn't say there was that much work involved it's basically just a load of youtube/facebook/flicker plugins.
