If you upgraded to the official version of the 2.1 ROM on your Hero, you lost root access (and lost the ability to get root access back).

That has been remedied as of today, thanks to the guys on the Villain ROM website.

    LOL... OK, In english:

If you recently got a HTC Hero, and downloaded the 2.1 update on your phone a few weeks ago, then you lost the ability to "Root" your phone. If you want to install custom firmware, then you need root access. If you want to enable paid apps in the marketplace, root access is one of the ways of getting access to them.

The instructions on the link above will enable root access.

You need to install ADB (a command line tool that lets you interface with the android operating system on your phone while connected via USB).

Then while in the ADB tools folder on your PC, run the batch file linked from the site above, and wait a few minutes. All of your files and data are preserved, so you don't lose anything.

Disclaimer: I'm not responsible if anything goes wrong! If you read that thread above, or this one here you can see what potential issues may arise if you try this.
