I'm just wondering if anyone has experience of being a Transsexual in the Irish Military. I'm a member of the Reserve Defence Forces and I don't exactly want to leave, but when I transition, I want to know if there will be an legal issues concerning this.

I don't know whether do drop this in the Legal or Military forum to be honest and would be interested to know what the situation is.

Hopefully you'll find someone who's experienced with military law who can look into it. I bet it's a new area and there is little to know existing case-law relating to this issue.

no offence mate.. but i get the feeling you are really just making alot of crap up and posting here for your entertainment....it's kinda looking like you are just messing around here on a forum that really is useful and seriously helpful to LBGT people....

i have looked through your past posts on boards because i grew suspicious...

in the past, you have been a red blooded male , oggling girls and bragging about conquests,

then you were bisexual for a couple of posts,

before you returned to your hetrosexual previous self,

Now you have recently announced you are now transgender and going to have the full transition,

you were a radio dj in college up ro recently too,
now low and behold you have been in the defence forces ....

i don't mean to be hurtful, if you are genuinely confused or coming to terms with your sexuality, but please don't treat the forum as a means for entertaining your flights of fancy...

i could be wrong, but i just sense insincerity here

I see how I may give off insincerity. I am bisexual but dont drool over men. I am a voluntry radio dj and i am in the reserve defense forces. I'm not one to take a flight of fancy and despite how i might act. I do that this place seriously.

I dont mind my actions being questioned. I just treat each forum differently and yes I am struggling in a sense but I am deadly serious about this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though, i see how it could bother people without considerable explaination.

in the past, you have been a red blooded male , oggling girls and bragging about conquests

and in the past I've said things and acted in certain ways when I was in denial, bragged about things and even said some pretty downright misogynistic things while I was trying to fight and hide how I really felt inside. don't think that means I'm taking the piss either

I think that itsthatmanagain is genuine and what has been said by him in the past doesn't matter

I do now identify as trans, but that hasn't done much to kill my sex drive. I know there's some things I'll have to change when transition. It is a struggle to accept everything but i hope certain aspects of my personality can change over the coming years.

fair enough mate, i haven't a clue what you are going through and i shouldn;t judge, i am sorry if i have annoyed you and sorry for hijacking your thread...

i just saw some posts about wanting to make radio shows about lbgt issues and thought maybe you might be trying to take the piss outta anyone that would volunteer to help you out with them because i saw you had behaved differently in other forums ... i get it now, you are genuine and you have struggled to get to where you are at now... sorry for questioning you mate... best of luck... now back to the topic guys........

Why do you presume that sexual orientation or sex drive have anything to do with being trans, or that they should change if one transitions?

Thanks for the insight though. I know i behave differently than some might expect, but thats 25 years living as a male. I'll have alot to adjust to and though id personally like a change, i doubt my personality will change all that much.

Legally, there would be no issue.

Practically, the Army is strict about gender segregation and a transsexual person would probably cause a few headaches. There would also be the issue of acceptance by either gender as privacy is at a minimum.

I gathered it would cause some headaches. Its the social transition within the defence forces that could be the problem.
