A friend of mine is looking at a Golf 06 with around 70k miles Tdi.

Would that be considered high milage for the those 4 years? He wont be doing huge milage but wants a diesel. The car seems well looked after but he is a bit worried about the milage.

    what do ye think? Thanks

My 06 has the exact same. But it took alot of driving to get it to that. If the car is in good shape it mightn't be a issue though?

i would not consider that huge milage for a VW diesel. 4 years totaling 70k is 17.5K miles a year. Check service history and if the car looks ok then it should be ok. If it looks rough then it probably hasnt been looked after.

Ya it has a full service history and is in good nick. I suppose the amount on the clock will not be a big issue so.

The VW diesel is a lot differnt to petrol versions that way.

Any things to look out for with the tdi when the milage gets high?

I believe the timing-belt, water-pump, tensioners, auxiliary belts for that car are due to be changed at 80,000 miles or 4 years, whichever arrives sooner, in other words very soon. The cost will be in the region of €700. Check in the maintenance schedule booklet when they are actually due for that engine.

if your paying 700 for a timing belt service you are getting shafted. i got my leon done last year for less than half that..

To add to whats been said:

    Oil oil oil oil oil.

The car can look great but the mechanic who worked on it could have been a tit.

Call the garages in the service history, ask what oil they would use for the type of car.

It should meet VW505.01 spec or VW507 if its on longlife service interval, though Im open to correction on whether that is right or not. Im not too up to date with the newer TDI's and oil standards numbers but it is quite important that the right stuff is used.

If your friend then gets the car he should change the oil religiously with the correct stuff and it will last him a lot longer then you think. 70k is small stuff :p

Have been quoted from 650 to 450 for a passat timing belt change incl pullys and water pump. dont know what the golf price range is but 350 sounds VERY cheap

I got my Leon done too for £330 including water pump at a Seat main dealer. Maybe you're just looking in the wrong places...although I think there may be a small bit more work involved in the Passat to get at the belt. Open to correction on this.

Still on a Golf I wouldn't pay more than £350-400...same car as a Leon so work should take same...
