Experts: Vatican Radio transmitters 'pose cancer risk'
By David Willey BBC News, Rome
Pope Benedict in a studio of Vatican Radio in Rome (file photo from March 2006) From its studios in Vatican City, Vatican Radio broadcasts around the world

There is a "coherent and significant connection" between radiation from Vatican Radio aerials and childhood cancer, researchers have said.

The Italian experts looked at high numbers of tumours and leukaemia in children who live close to Vatican Radio transmitters.

The 60 antennas stand in villages and towns near Rome.

The Vatican said it was astonished and would present contrary views to a court in Rome.

Italian courts have been investigating for 10 years whether of an abnormally high number of deaths from cancer among families living near the aerials just north of the Italian capital can be attributed to electromagnetic radiation.

The 300-page report, ordered by the courts and carried out by Italy's most prestigious cancer research hospital, now concludes that there is a connection between radiation and the cancer incidents.
    Obsolete

Some 60 huge steel aerials were erected on farmland owned by the Vatican during the last century.

They transmit Vatican Radio programmes around the world on medium and short wave.

There you go listening to the Pope gives you cancer. :D

This is a fairly pointless article. It's just the BBC picking on the Vatican because they're an easy target. There's plenty of aerials in other places.

According to boards.ie groupthink radio waves either:

Cause cancer if they have anything to do with the catholic church or un-atheism

Are a wonderful thing that cures as many ailments as weed does if they come from your own locked and unjailbroken iPhone 4G while facebooking and twitting about how bad religion is. or if they come from a mobile phone mast which has a large number of biddies complaining about it

The health benefits of a mobile phone mast are directly proportional to the number of mucksavages complaining about it.

The best radio waves are those emitted by Steve Jobs's own body.

People build/buy houses next to a big fukoff radio mast (thats been there since the 1930's when the area was sparsely populated) and then blame all their real/imaginary (mostly the latter) ailments on said mast with scant scientific evidence to back up their claims (Oh the ironing) ?

Im all for a bit of RCC bashing but surely there are better sticks out there to do it with ?

Surely the BBC have lots of radio masts around the UK (and beyond)

Some of them are even using the supposedly obsolete medium and short waves

The Roman Catholic church is responsible for slowing down the progress of science throughout the past millennium. If the RCC never existed we would probably be living in a Star Trek type of age where most of the known diseases would already be cured (including cancer). Although there may be a threat from alien diseases we may already have good enough vaccines for them.

Sure it's easy to pick on the Vatican, it doesn't make it less true that radio waves can cause cancer.

Well ... where do I start.

    *cough* *cough*

Let's move this history lesson way back to the time of Emperor Constantine stall we. As we all know, he was the first Christian Emperor of Rome and basically helped most of Europe to convert to Christianity. After this the Greek and Roman school of philosophy were abandoned and closed. For those who don't know modern science originated from fields of philosophy, for example, physics originated from natural philosophy and so on. One of the main causes for the fall of the Roman Empire was Christianity. Christianity taught the belief in an afterlife which gave a certain amount of hope and courage to people. Emperor Constantine issued an edict promising the Christians his favour and protection. Attitudes in the Roman Empire changed from being antagonistic to becoming pacifistic. Little over a century later, the Roman Empire collapsed, western civilisation went into massive decline and Europe entered the dark ages. The advancement of philosophy and thus science in this time was basically at a stand still, except in some parts of the Islamic world. In dark age Christendom at this time all people who spoke out against the church teaching or who seemed to be practicing 'witchcraft' were basically burnt to death for being hieratic. Then along came the Renaissance when people finally think again and the works of the Greek and Roman philosophers started to be read again and improved upon. The Catholic Church of course during this time stood it's ground and tortured such scientists as Galileo for their theories. The Church's grip on society eased in the late 18th century and people again began to express their ideas freely.

So the point is that Christianity basically helped in the posponement of scientific advancement for about 1,000 years during the dark ages, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance. Imagine what type of world we would be in if the dark ages in Europe never happened.

Vatican declares womens ordination a grave crime
t was meant to be the document that put a lid on the clerical sex abuse scandals that have swept the Roman Catholic world. But instead of quelling fury from within and without the church, the Vatican stoked the anger of liberal Catholics and women's groups by including a provision in its revised decree that made the "attempted ordination" of women one of the gravest crimes in ecclesiastical law.

The change put the "offence" on a par with the sex abuse of minors.

Terry Sanderson, president of the National Secular Society, called the document "one of the most insulting and misogynistic pronouncements that the Vatican has made for a very long time. Why any self-respecting woman would want to remain part of an organisation that regards their full and equal participation as a 'grave sin' is a mystery to me."

You can always rely on Rome.

Well, it's theirs, obviously. I'm not trying to defend them, I'm just saying that a lot of other parties use the same equipment. Why not mention them as well.
And, if you believe newspapers, everything gives you cancer nowadays anyway.

I don't think todays church is Catholic, it's something but not what it used to be.

Ever since the 60's it became more modernized and liberal supporting other religions and going against what previous popes and saints believed in.
Notice how this child abuse epidemic within the church only goes back 50 years?
It's because priests believed in their vocation were as today's liberal priests couldn't give a fcuk, sure some priests support gay marriage, it's a joke.

Now this is a true Pope
