The Farming Independent ran a story on page 23 this week (13th July 2010) with news of a vaccine for use in cows for mastitis, 800 cows are currently being tested in Monaghan, Wexford, Waterford, Tipperary and Limerick. They expect the vaccine to launch in October this year. the vaccine will fight against coliforms (e-coli) Staph. Aureus and Coagulaseee neg Staph. Cost is expected to be 20-25 euro per 3 dose treatment.

I thought this would be years away, maybe it still is in that more research will be carried out before farmers will buy it, although a vacine for 100 cows costing 2500 euro?? versues treating the odd cow with mastitis? Also id question dry cow antibiotics use / role

    Any opinions??

Sounds pricey, and almost certainly won't be a magic bullet. Chances are it will struggle in the face of poor hygiene or a faulty machine or stressed cows. I think all the usual things we do in a good milking routine and watching cow husbandry will still be important.

It will be one more vaccine on the bill!
