Wifi problems in ios4

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
Found this link when searching for why my iPod touch wifi had become poor at holding it's wifi connection.

Go into the router page and change to 20mhz bands and also set it to a fixed channel.

Ios4 leaves wifi on in the background when the device is switched off. As with the iPad it seems that the apple products won't work with 40mhz bands in an attempt to save power. My 802.11n router had defaults of 40mhz bands and auto channel scan. As it auto changed channel by a gap of 40mhz it seems my iPod and iPhone would not be able to refind the connection.

Good god, I’m soo glad i didn’t upgrade my Iphone and Ipod touch to OS4.0. I hear nothing but the problems with it and friends who upgraded have real difficulties downgrading back to 3.1.3
I don’t remember Apple ever screwing up this badly, ever.

Precisely. Mine were fine until the 'upgrade'. Now I have to change settings in my wifi router which were never a problem. Changing these settings effectively reduces the max bandwidth available from your router down from a potential 300mbs to around 100mbs. That matters if you run many devices on your home network. So apple is a bit disingenuous in lauding the 802.11n capabilities of it's devices. My mac mini now cannot use these capabilities due to ios4 on my iPod touch. It's not really a problem for me but it might be for some.

they made something that was good and working into rubbish. Microsoft Vista debacle springs to my mind. This could be Apple's "Vista".

Maybe they got some of it fixed in 4.1 (is this out yet?), wait and try that one if you cant downgrade to 3.1.3

I think you could be right about a 'vista' moment. Then in a few years when people have moved to android and the google os they'll do something bad too. As if logging your wifi router encryption status in google maps wasn't bad enough.

Is that about the same company that nearly sidelined themselves into obscurity and out of existence? :D (o.k. we're talking pre-iMac days).

I haven't had many problems with iOS4 on my 3Gs - the battery life at worst has taken a dip.

IOS4 is fine with my iphone 3gs. My old ipod touch 8gb (latest generation though) was unable to hold a wifi connection at home. I changed the settings of my router from 40mhz bands to 20mhz bands and to a fixed channel and now it works brilliantly again. The advice in the apple kb article solved my issues. I also now have to switch it Airplane Mode when the device sleeps otherwise it stays connected to wifi despite push being turned off and the battery drains. This is all new behaviour from os 3.1.3 to 4.0. I wasn't aware that the wifi routines would be different, but problems are solved now. The question is whether or not this is an improvement and if this outweighs the other benefits of the new firmware. I still love my Apple products and it's not meant to be a personal attack.

You might want to tell Kevin Turner to stop nicking your lines in advance.....

"It looks like the iPhone 4 might be their Vista, and I'm okay with that," said Kevin Turner, Microsoft's chief operating officer, in a keynote speech at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC), which runs through Thursday in Washington, D.C.
