    Hey,

Just bought a new laptop there and want to transfer all my songs from my Ipod to my new library on this laptop without having to purchase some software to do this for me.
Going through a tutorial now where you access the Ipod icon in 'My Computer' but when i get to this stage, the Ipod icon keeps dissappearing after about 5 seconds.

    Any ideas or alternatives!?

    Cheers

Firstly what ipod are you using??? If its a touch or an iphone you can forget about it because they arent designed to be used as external hard drives like previous generations of ipods.

If the icon keeps disappearing, go to iTunes and click the icon of your ipod on the left sidebar. This is the screen with 'Update' and 'Restore iPod'. At the bottom of the screen there should be a box with 'Enable iPod for Disk use', tick this. Also in the folder setting screen in your computer's control panel, click 'show all folders'.

Get back to me if this works :D:D

Ipod classic 30GB. When i go to that page in Itunes the 'Enable Disk Use' option is shaded out but already ticked!

Just there I went into show hidden files etc and thats all done.

I keep reconnecting the Ipod and try to dart through all the folders quickly but the whole 'My Computer' window just closes after about 5 seconds and when I bring it back up, the Ipod icon has dissappeared.

Try Sharepod. I use nothing else for my 30GB Classic.
    http://www.getsharepod.com/
Put the program onto your ipod drive, and run it from any computer, or run it from your PC. Either way it should do what you want.

if disk mode is enabled, then there should be a hidden folder in the ipod's hard drive. to view this goto folder setting and select show hidden folders and files.

Copy the folder to your new laptop and import the folder into itunes. and it will be fine.

i think the music directory is in itunes_controlls/music/f0 - f50

also @longhalloween please don't comment about things you don't know about, I can think of at least 4 different ways to back up the music from the ipod touch

This is my main problem. I know how to access the hidden files etc but the ipod icon keeps disappearing on the 'my computer' screen therefore i cannot get into it to access the files!!!

Have you registered the new lap-top to use your online iTunes account (each account can have up to 5 computers registered)?

If you are running out of computers, de-register old computers.

How do you do that? I'm a computer dummy so I need a simple explanation.

In iTunes once you have logged in to your iTunes account, under menu-item "Store" there are options to "Authorize this computer..." or "Deuthorize this computer..."

    I have authorised the computer.

What next? Do I plug in the ipod? Sync? I don't want to lose the music on the ipod.
