I am just wondering Is it possible to put a diesel 300d (123)engine in a 280e body.Is there much involved?
Im a diesel person and bought my first diesel a new 1600 golf in 1982.Anyone know who would do this conversion?
    Thanks for any replies.
    Jerry

A lot of them have been converted to diesel. Why not but a diesel to start with and spare the bother of converting one. Theres a couple on donedeal at the moment.

Most of the diesels for sale are in very poor state of repair and most petrol cars are in good nick so I just thought that a transplant if sucessful would be the best of both worlds.

I'd be a bit bolder and put a turbo diesel in from a newer merc.

    I have a w123 200 petrol with a w124 190dsl engine 75bhp. Not a bad motor.. The 2.5 would have been a better job. I know of an immaculate '83 240 dsl german import r.h.d. for 10k.

That guy with the Fintal diesel should be reported to ISPCM, for cruelty to his Merc. :D:D:D

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Wouldn't you need to replace the front suspension as well, to cope with the extra weight?

Sure, not only the suspension. There are other parts needed for the conversion - coolant radiator, oil radiator, gearbox (sometimes the drive shaft as well), rear differential with final drive, electrical wiring for the glow plugs with controls, relay, etc., ignition barrel, starter motor, engine shutdown installation, speedometer unit, sound proofing mats under the engine bonnet (different than in petrol models), front suspension (mentioned before), complete clutch and few other bits and pieces that you always forget to add to the list. That is all assuming you have the OM61x engine and not the newer one, as the list would be bigger.
