    Hi all,

quick question - we've just bought a house, and made our first mortgage payment, so we sent off the Mortgage Interest Relief form to the government.

As we were renting before, we were claiming rent relief - will revenue stop rent relief automatically once they receive the mortgage forms, or do I have to contact them myself, and ask them to stop the rent relief?

    Cheers,
    galah

Your still entitled to rent relief for this year. I doubut it will be stopped automatically, it'd be best to ring them, and get it cancelled for next year.

The 2011 tax year is set up on the Revenue computer systems already, and rent relief is a credit that gets brought forward automatically from the previous year... so it'll be on your records for next year already. It wouldnt be long before they copped you had both reliefs, and they'd claw back any rent relief given incorrectly.

cheers for that. As soon as the new relief is applied correctly, I'll get in touch so!

    Appreciated! :)

Hi galah - Did you have to contact the revenue yourself regarding your rent relief- I will have to do the same I think as I am buying a house at the moment...

Provided you have paid more than €2,000 in rent in 2011 up to the date you cease to rent you will still be entitled to the full credit (€320).
