    Hey Guys,

Just wondering if I can be pointed in the right direction.
I'm looking to get into a MA that doesn't involve class sparring or competitions. I used to do JJJ and loved it apart from the sparring which I tried and now have a lump of bone out of my shin and still painful after 3 years:rolleyes: Also was in Judo and TKD an age back.
I love the philosophy and discipline physically and mentally in MA and it's what I loved about JJJ.
Anyone know if Lung Ying Kung Fu could be a way to go?

Any more ideas would be great :)

I don't know about Lung Ying Kung Fu, but as far as I know Bujinkan has no sparring. Here's a list of dojos http://www.bujinkan.ie/find.html

On another note, don't be put off by your sparring experiences in the past. Most modern gyms and dojos employ proper safety practices and equipment, to minimize the risk of injury. That said, accidents do occur, unfortunately.

    Good luck.

Thanks for that link :) I'll check out some of the schools as I like the idea behind it well with the quick look I had.
Well the last time was an accident but I used to look like a battered wife each week which wasn't a good look walking beside my bf :o

    Where are you?.

(Regards your shin, without giving you medical advice but if you didn't break your bone by might just have congeled blood under the skin. It can be pretty sore, but you can have it broken down fairly easily too.)

Anyway, best of luck finding a club but the lads can be much more helpful in suggesting somewhere (or even offering invites to visit their clubs) if they have an idea where you are.

Honestly, just by going on what you have described (as I've nothing else to go on) it sounds as if they might have been a club who think "training hard" means kicking lumps out of each other :(

I hope you find a club where you enjoy training.

Look up Tai Chi might be something within it for you.

If you're not into sparring then I wouldn't recomend Tai Chi, as the 5 Traditional pillars of the art are nei gung, form, tui shou(wrestling and drills) sanshou(sparring with strikes and throws locks etc) and weapons Inc sparring with such.
if you're leaving out parts of the art then you ar wasting your time and better off doing yoga or something.

Have you considered aikido? No sparring or competitions, loads of similar techniques to jjj so your previous training will stand to you.

    Check out:

whereabout are you based and what clubs are available to you?

Aikido is certainly worth a look. Maybe also check is there is a capoeira club in range, which by all accounts is great craic but doesn't involve much scrapping. To be honest, I wouldn't get caught up too much on the style / martial art, as more often than not the number of knocks you pick up and the competitiveness is down much more to the club and instructor(s). Drop in on all the clubs in your area and see what they're like, even the likes of the boxing clubs will often be more than willing to let you train without sparring. You also get a lot of sparring and freestyle grappling which doesn't involve getting constantly battered, so I wouldn't discount sparring, just be a bit more selective about what you're after.

Thanks for all help, I'm going to check out Aikido and pop into a few clubs. I'm based in Dublin and drive so I'm not restricted. In relation to Tai Chi, I used to do that with master Deng and really loved it but wasn't so flexible with travel back then so was awkward to get to.
    Cheers

I know, but I still wanna try Akido.

But first I'm rehab'ing a dislocated ankle (seven weeks now :( ) before I even contemplate stepping onto the Judo tatami.
