"Abandoned car?"

Maybe someone can help me with a question.

If a person owns a car and uses if for nothing but
to place it on the street outside their house
so nobody else can park there, is this allowed.

What, if any, are the rules relating to this? If the car
is taxed and insured, NO NCT, can it be left there
    indefinitely?

    Thanks

Yes, it can be left there indefinitely as long as it legally parked as it is not abandoned.

if the road is "public", then it would need road tax. Other wise, it's legal

If it is legal then nothing you can do. If they are still taxing it, NCTing it and paying for a permit, and not using it, then they must be a little off.

A car cannot be used in a public place without a valid NCT. If it's taxed and insured, though, I can't see why it can't be parked outside the owners house.

In addition, make sure it's not breaching other traffic laws such as parking too close to a junction or corner, or parking where there's a solid white line down the centre of the road, causing an obstruction, or hindering/engangering other road users. Also check local bye-laws. No sense in giving someone the tools to get back at you for taking 'their' space :).

Perhaps the car is not running and therefore not yet NCT'ed. Maybe repairs are unaffordable in the recession. There are all kinds of reasons why it could be left there and not necessarily malicious.

The car might be lowering the tone of the road. :p

Would it even have to be insured if its not driven? Tax yes but nct and insurance I'm not so sure.

You have to have a current insurance policy to tax a car, though..... Not sure of the situation where the insurance expires before the tax is up.

You can't have an uninsured car on a public road, it may go on fire, plenty other reasons.

If it was on a trailer it could still go on fire but definitely wouldn't require insurance, I think if its parked and is not moved then you could not be prosecuted.

Sorry for hijacking a thread, but is there anyway of finding out if a car has been abandoned? Theres an Evo 7 near me, in an underground carpark, but not in a space. Its totally covered in dust, and hasnt been taxed, NCT'd, insured for over a year. I was thinking that it may have been nicked, and just dumped there..

Ring the guards with the reg plate; Im sure theyll be able to tell if its been reported as stolen.

There is no NCT, as the car has not moved in at least three years, and it
is older than 4 years old. It is parked there purely to take that space and to prevent anyone else EVER using it. Fair enough, but what an eyesore, to me it's basically "littering."

btw, it was just a question out of boredom as opposed to me being irate.

if it runs out of tax, and the reg plates were to go missing.. you can call the council to have it removed.
but its outside his own house, and if it were to be removed there,ll be someone else,s car parked there for you to look at....

i actually asked a cop about one in shannon before. Same story but crap car! covered in dust in a carpark, tax and insurance year out of date, and the entry date from the ticket on dash was like a year and a half ago!
Apparently as its a private carpark, its up to the owners of the carpark. Unless it is stolen, in which case they will investigate.

    1. get reg plate number.
    2. check tax disc and insurance disc and see if the reg plate number on the discs match the actual reg plate on the car.
    3. ring gardai abd just ask them to double check if it is stolen, they may not tell you as your a 3rd party but just ask them to look into it for the owners sake if it is stolen.

The same story where i live, retired guard has 3 car dumped in the estate(+his own 2 car everyday cars). The cars have no tax, insurence, nct etc....some of the cars have moss and sh*t growning in them! anumber of neighbours have rang the county council but they cant do much because the estate is not handed over to them.It is turning the place into a scrapyard and is very unfair on the residents who generally look after the place well well.Have the guards any power over this?

Most local authorities have a procedure for dealing with abandoned cars. They write to the registered owner, and if no response, they will take the car. Contact the environment dept of your local county council.
