Just a quick one for those of you more in the know than myself on the above subject. Damaged the car the other day (hit median barrier) 04 Ford Focus C-Max with about 56k miles (1.6 petrol), no other car involved, didn't appear to be that much damage done and am waiting for the assessors report back but he did mention that it may be 'written off'.........my question is does anyone how close to the 'book value' does the value of the repairs have to be in order for the insurance co to declare it 'write off'.........from a few of car web sites the 'asking prices' for a similar vehicle is in teh €6 to €8k range

What sort of damage did the car sustain? Frontal or did it spin out damaging more panels.

Did any airbags deploy? Some cars can be written off for this alone as the price to get replacement airbag modules, airbags and seatbelt pretensioners is cost prohibitive depending on the vehicle.

Rear drivers side hit concrete median barrier damaging the rear bumper, rear hatch back door won't open, lower rear light broken, no air bags deployed..........the whole rear is slightly twisted/warped but both rear doors are open freely.........also slight damage to panels above bumper

Book value of an 04 C-Max with 62,000 miles is:

    €4,850 - LX
    €5,250 - Zetec

I think it's about 50% costs to value would mean it's an economic write off, so if the repairs come to €2,500 + then it's liable to be a write off.

Doesn't take too much damage to rack up a €2,500 bill so if it's all down one side it might be new car time.

OP if it is an economic write off, get someone to look at the car and give you a quote for repair. Often you can buy back the car from the insurance and get it repaired for under the amount they pay out. Only it it is an Economic write off, don't dream about it, if it is a mechanical write off. There are enough of these cars out there as it is!!!!

If you do choose to repair, I'm sure you'll do the right thing and notify anyone who might want to buy your car that it was involved in an accident - right?

Generally over half the value would be a good indication

I'm guessing you're looking at an insurance write-off here, and the rear being out of line should make you very wary of getting it back on the road yourself.

Not so sure about that. A friend of mine crashed his 05 Peugeot 206 back in November and repairs came to €4,200. There was no massive damage to the car so it did seem like a ridiculous price. If you were getting it done yourself and not going through the insurance you'd be spending a hell of a lot less than that to get the car back on the road. But anyway, The car was probably only worth around 5.5k or thereabouts so he was surprised they didn't write it off when the repair bill was that high.

And then the most confusing thing of all - he renewed last month for the same premium as last year - no increase!
