Firefly: Slightly interesting but Pointless point

Other people will have worked this out previously methinks...

In the firefly universe there's only around 30,000 Reavers. In 'Serenity' there's reference to Miranda being populated by 30 million people, and a 10th of 1 percent of that going mental after the pax stuff was put into the atmosphere.

Anyway... just thought I'd share!

But how many of the 30 million Mirandians were killed by the Reavers?

That's not really his point. And the answer to that is uncertain, as it seems that most of them died from the other extreme reaction to the Pax.

As for "only 30,000", the Normans conquered England with 20,000. You can do a hell of a lot of damage with a few dozen people in a frontier wilderness - there just isn't a sufficiently organised opposition.

And I suppose another point to make would be that a crew of less than 8 ran Serenity (less if you count that in the series only about four actually 'ran' the ship), meaning 30,000 people could man a pretty big fleet.

Well they infect other people right? I was always under the impression that they did anyway, but I havent watched the series or serenity in a good few years now so I may be remembering wrong.

No but in an episode they make one man witness all the atrocities they acted out upon the rest of his shipmates and, driven insane by the horror of it, he mutilated himself to resemble them.... Like a creepy stockholm syndrome....

In the series, it's kind of suggested that they can add to their numbers somehow, but the movie kind of discards that.

out of the original 30 million at least some are still on the planet dead as can be seen in the film. the rest presumably turned to reaver with I imagine a great many killing each other in the process. I'd also imagine since the occurrence many of them have been killed by the other forces around the system

Perhaps that is how their numbers increase?
