Upstairs Radiators Cold

    Hi,

Looking for some advice. With the good weather we have been having recently we havent used the central heating much in the last 2-3 months.

It was a little nippy the other day so we put on the heating. We have gas central heating by the way.

Anyway, downstairs radiators are fine but upstairs were totally cold. I have looked up online and most websites talk about a ball valve in the expansion/header tank. Now the websites were from the UK and were talking about it being in the loft which I assume is the attic.

I dont have the first clue about plumbing and I dont even know if there is a tank in the attic. I am going to bleed the radiators tonight but I dont think that will help. I had a look at the tank in the hot press and there appears to be a small leak as the ground was wet. Also I tried turning off all downstairs radiators but got nothing.

    Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Also the immersion doesn't seem to work but I dont know if that is related. We are renting the house and have been for about 8 months or so and I dont know if the immersion worked ever.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also I should probably mention that hot water is fine all around the house.

    Thanks

check and see is there a room thermostat fitted in the landing or main bedroom, it may need to be turned up to a higher setting

    Thanks for your reply

The upstairs thermostat is set to approx 19c

They worked fine before in the winter (well to be honest there was one day they didnt but they came back on the next, probably due to having the heating on a lot, not sure I want to waste money just yet trying that one)

When I say they are cold I mean that they are not even luke warm, totally stone cold.

    I'll try it anyway

    Thanks again

    turn thermostat up full
is there a mini valve in the hotpress or beside boiler(is there a orange light on)
if the light is on and still no heat upstairs the valve may be stuck
    any chance of pic?

    Hi meercat

    Thanks for the reply

I have attached pictures of the boiler and of the tank in the hot press. One or two more below

    No lights I'm afraid

Is the thermostat clicking when you turn it? if so the actuator (the small gray box near the floor of the hot press) is faulty.

Just turned the upstairs thermostat there a few minutes ago and there was a sound when I turned it up which sounded like a spring flicking or something. It happens in the same spot but only there. Any turn after this point and there is no sound.

Which box in the pics would be the actuator? Would this have anything to do with the immersion not working either?

Sorry for all the questions its just that I dont have a clue about heating systems! The immersion in my parents house was removed years ago for some reason so I never knew how they worked :)

It sounds like the stat is working fine. The actuator is a small greay box sitting on top of a valve. There are two of them in your picture side by side. It sounds like the one for upstairs is faulty or stuck and might need to be replaced.

    Thanks JohnnieK

    Would that be expensive?

It's hard to say. You could see if it is stuck first. There is a leaver on the actuator that you can slide from auto to manual. It will either be on top or the bottom. move this to manual and let it go back to auto. Then try it again.

If it still dose not work it will have to be replaced. Not sure what the price is for an actuator (Sunvic) I'll ask my supplier.
