    Hi all,

I have a query that sounds pretty simple but I’m finding it difficult to figure out the best solution.

My folks live in south county Dublin and watch the four Irish TV channels on a Sony Bravia TV that’s a few years old. They had been using a little aerial that sits beside the TV but the reception got so bad I eventually went out and bought a slightly better aerial and cable and ran it up into the attic and it sits loose up there. The reception is ok now but the aerial is not fixed to anything and sometimes gets moved. The TV has a digital receiver in it but it only picks up sound. I think this is to do with different formats MPEG2/MPEG4 or something.

What I want to do is put in place something that would improve the signal on all four channels. Also it would be nice to get the BBC and basic English channels without any subscription and in HD if possible.

After some trawling of the web, and in particular boards, the solution I’ve come up with is as follows:
Install a satellite dish (Lidl are doing one for 90euro) on the outside of the house and affix the aerial to it. Then I can receive the English channels in SD through the Satellite dish and the Irish channels in analogue through the aerial.
Then to get HD BBC etc I would need to upgrade the decoder/receiver box. And to get the Irish channels on DTT I would need to get a new separate decoder/receiver box.

Basically I’m wondering is this the simplest way to get good quality RTE and BBC etc without a monthly subscription and is there anything that would make it easier?

Thanks in advance for any advice

FTA Satellite receiver or Freesat Satellite Receiver for the UK channels and aerial for Irish Channels.

The lidl sat gear is a very poor dish bracket usually. Also unless you are patient and good on DIY, better to buy a Freesat install (many local Dublin installers), once off payment. If you want HD, then get a Freesat HD sat receiver, not the lidl box at all.

Wait till after Oct for Digital Decoder for Irish TV and use Analogue for now.
