I've been following the Twitter accounts for @091labs and @Tom_Murphy for a while now and have been amazed and delighted with the way this hackerspace has taken off in Galway. Congratulations to all who've made it happen.

As one of the organizers of Limerick OpenCoffee Club (First Thursday of every month at AbsoluteHotel.com from 11am) I'd like to extend an open invitation to you all to drop in at any time to tell how you achieved all of this and advise us on how we can replicate the model in Limerick. Complementary coffee and pastries guaranteed :pac:

    Will there be hang sangwidges?

Would love to see one get going in Limerick. In my opinion the biggest factor is getting the word out, telling literally everyone you know about it and trying to get them to help out or get involved. But that's just my opinion... perhaps we just got lucky with finding a place or due to a few very generous people. We are of course very happy to help get one going in Limerick once things are more stable here!

Hi James thanks for the words of support. There are two talks I recommend you and anyone once else you know getting involved in Limerick watching. The first is from 24c3 (2007) Building a Hacker Space and the second is 25c3 (2008) Building an international movement: hackerspaces.org. Both share founders personal experiences and ideas about getting hackerspaces off the ground around the world. The next step is starting to holding regular weekly meetups and building your community around areas of interest. It helps if you use the same venue and time. Try and arrange visits to TOG in Dublin and 091 Labs in Galway when you and others get time. All TOG members were very supportive in helping 091 Labs find its feet and continue to be so as we grow. More than happy to share our experiences with you whenever you visit or call.

Thanks lads, all good advice. Making a start on this next Monday when I travel to OpenCoffee Galway at the 091labs venue where I look forward to meeting a few of you and seeing for myself what makes a hackerspace tick.

Just a quick update. We had our first meeting in Limerick last night with a turnout of 15 people and more than enough interest to make it go ahead.

So that was the easy bit, now for the tough part and actually making it happen. We've already had lots of great input from Galway, Cork and Dublin hackerspaces so thanks for that and please keep it coming.

Ah brilliant, good on ye lads!

If ye ever want to attend one of our weekly meetings on Tuesday at 7pm you're more than welcome. We had a great meeting this evening, one of the most positive and we even decided we'd work on a hackerspace project for everyone.

    Aaron.

Great to see Limerick Hackerspace taking shape. After last nights meetup they now have a new name - milklabs - derived from Made In LimericK. If your interested in getting involved join in the conversation here.
