Does this only show them while on a rescue or while training. Waterford EI-SAR is out at the moment but not showing on the map.

They are up most days training, its going to be hard to say if they are on a rescue mission, however if they are a good distance from their bases its more than likely a rescue mission.

Best to zoom into the map when they are up and see how far they are going

Yeah, but what I was wondering is why the Waterford EI-SAR is not showing on the map at the moment when I can see it operating around Dunmore. Does it only show if it is on a rescue, when its callsign is Rescue 117?

It's possible the transponder on SAR is U/S or circuit breaker isn't in. They should show up when on a flight regardless of tasking/training.

"I see two on the map right now one northwest, and one around Dublin's coast"- the one to the North West would have been EI-CXS Mr.Tayto. Good site, handy.

I believe the system you are viewing is AIS (Automatic Identification System) and not the standard ADSB aviation system you see on these types of website. AIS is a maritime system, NOT an aviation system. The principles are similar as they both use VHF transmissions.

All Coastguard helicopters in Ireland and the UK are fitted with AIS transponders, this is to allow Coastguard stations track the helicopters when on a rescue mission. AIS is a marine tracking radar which is used by ships but is fitted in the Rescue helicopters as well.

Sometimes terrain affects AIS reception. I monitor 115 and 118 on a regular basis on Marine Traffic and also on Channel 16 VHF but only for VHF i would miss the activity as they do not appear on screen. Also sometimes Malin Head or Valentia Radio may ask if the AIS is switched on. Hopefully this bit of info may help.
