Toyota Yaris 2006 (New Model) Problems

    Hi Folks,

My wife was driving up to Dublin from Galway yesterday and the car conked out at Enfield. The water pump packed in and the engine will not start. The car passed the nct last week. Just wondering if Toyota will replace and fix for free given they year and low mileage of the car (40k miles). Seems to me to be highly unusual. The mechanic in Enfield now thinks that the engine manifold and engine block could have been affected as well.

We are waiting to call a dealership in Kildare to discuss the problem (that's where we both the car from new. Does anybody think Toyota will fix this out of goodwill given the track record to date?

In an amazing coincidence I saw another Yaris broken down this morning on my way into work!

I wonder if the problem is related to the recall issue?

No harm in asking, when was it last serviced?

    Why not ask them?

If water pump packed in, one of 2 things will happen

    1. Waterpump fails intact, car over-heats and slowely dies
    2. Waterpump SIEZES, shreads your timing belt, car died instantly, piston bends all your valves = VERY expensive repair and could be a new engine.

When you tried to restart the car, did the engine turn-over sound different or faster than normal? If it did, your timing belt shreaded and I hope you have big pockets!

(All this assumes that you have a timing belt, not a timing chain!)

The Yaris has a timing chain.

Water pumps packing up on the Yaris is well known in the trade ( but yet again kept quite by Toyota :) ) and engines being roasted because of it. If the mileage on the car is near enough average then Id go back to Toyota and dont stop till you get most of it covered under warranty. Just say you've heard of loads of people having the same problem and that you know its an inherint problem with the Yaris ;)

if it has a full service history ie with the dealer you want to do thd work, there is a good chance they will do something for you ie. maybe a percentage of the cost..

The car has 3 services in total

    1. 15k with dealership that the car was both from

    2. 35k Toyota dealership in Galway

    3. 50k service from a mechanic with 15 years experience and his own car dealership (but not linked into a particular brand).

The story I'm getting at the moment is that the 3rd service was not done by a reputable toyota dealership and this may cause a problem. I talked with the 3rd service guy and he said that he would be happy to send in a solicitors letter to ask Toyota Ireland as to why they discount him as being a reputable mechanic, he has also trained in mechanics that have gone on to work in Toyota dealerships.

Looks like the engine light came on and then the car was pulled over a minute later. The fan belt has indeed shredded, the car does start over I believe.

What do you think I should do if I get a negative reply back from the dealership where I bought the car? I was talking with another Toyota dealership and they said that they would not see any problem with getting this covered through Toyota Ireland.

    Also,
The car passed it's NCT on the 28th June last. Is there any way I can use this to my advantage?

yeah that history is good enough history for me and i believe a dealer will do something for you actually, which garage were you going to deal with?

What you need to do is get the mechanic to prove he used Toyota approved service items, i.e. that they correct oil and filter etc was used. No need for him to send a solicitors letter or any of that crap. What are the service intervals? Were these adhered to? A four year old car should have been serviced once a year at least regardless of mileage. That's the line Toyota will probably use.

But under the block exemptions you are entitled to get the car serviced wherever you want so long as the mechanic is vat registered and uses the correct parts.

I think it was slowly loosing water. The NCT was done two weeks ago and it was fine for that. They probably don;t check the water pump during the check though. The warning light came on and then the car was pulled over and would not start again, the battery went completely dead.
