Sports Massage - Mid Training

    Hi,

    Am thinking of getting a sports massage for my legs, butt and lower back etc but, i have started a training programme already for a marathon.

    if i get the massage, will i be out of action for a few days? or generally whats the rule of thumb with running the next day, im assuming my legs will be tender!

    the day after the spa has availability, i have a track interval session planned!

    I would generally try to schedule the massage the day after a harder / longer session or to coincide with a planned rest day. I would normally be able to run ok the next day, but sometimes the legs are a little tender. Never had to miss a run from it though.

    You mentioned a spa, in my experience, the massages in a spa would not be suffcient (even those labeled as "Sports"). My reccomendation would be to find a reputable physio near you and get the massage done there. Much more likley to hit the niggles specific to your running.

    Depend what your getting done, usually i'd run the morning before I have the massage and then depending on how it goes take the next day off or a very very easy run . I try to give 24 hour after if possible.

    ya, cheers....the reason for going to the spa is kind of a treat for herself also, im not too bothered about where it is, although i do accept, your probably correct, a reputable physio would be the better option for running related sports massages.
    im just worried about having to juggle my training schedule too much and have to take unplanned rest days due to sore/tender legs post massage :(

    As stated earlier, if its a sports massage, you'll should be fine to do a gentle run 24 hrs after it. You'll feel stiff but take it slowly and you'll be fine.

    If its a spa, you should be tired after it but no real aches the following day and will be able to run as normal.

    I've often run a few hours afterwards. It depends on how deep they need to go. I'd avoid a spa for a sports massage if I were you, they're most likely, 'girlie girls' who won't be able to go deep enough to benefit any injuries you may have nor would they have the experience with different injuries to note them. If you are getting one done at the spa try and opt for either a deep tissue massage or aromatherapy(they can mix the oils to benefit inflammed muscles, sprains etc) but aromatherapy is a very light massage and can completely knock you out.

    could be a good idea, thanks. im actually able to change the date to a day of rest, so now disruption :)
