E-smoking

I've recently converted to e-smoking or vaping as it is known as a replacement for cigarettes and honestly this is the first time in a decade of quitting attempts that I feel that I'm off the cigarettes once and for all.

There is a lot of misinformation and crap out there about it, and not a huge amount of research and even the FDA stuff is dodgy.

The Health New Zealand Ltd did a study on the contents and effects of e-smoking in 2008 that is very reassuring: http://www.healthnz.co.nz/RuyanCartridgeReport30-Oct-08.pdf

In short, the worst thing that can be said about e-cigarettes is that similar to any nicotine product derived from tobacco (be it patches, gum, pharmaceutical grate pure nicotine solution etc) there are trace amounts of Tobacco-specific Nitrosamines in them. But they are at very low level and at this level are not known to be carcinogenic.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about these products, including the FDA wanting to ban them because of said levels of nitrosamines which is frankly insane given the same nitrosamines are in patches and gum which are sold OTC.

In short, read the paper, get an idea what these contain and have some information on hand if a patient ever asks you about them. For committed nicotine addicts these are a very effective way of getting nicotine without all the carcinogens and tar associated with smoking tobacco.
